The March 2004 issue of Guitar World magazine includes a list of the 100 greatest heavy metal guitarists as selected by the magazine's staff. "This is not a list that ranks who can play the fastest or with the most taste, feeling or technique (although many players on our list have all of those arrows in their quiver)," the editors stress in the accompanying introduction. "It is, rather, a tribute to the great men who ****** iron and piss stainless steel razor blades, and do it every time they plug into an amplifier."

I think Guitar World contracted with either Rivals or Insiders to do the rankings for them.

Neil Young doesn't strike me as a "metal" guitarist.
Seems like their rankings included an intangible "contribution to metal" aspect. Which is fine, since that's what the ranking is about.
But, ain't no way Hendrix is that low let alone Townshend.

On first reading I was perplexed by having Neil Young on the list too. I don't claim to know all of his music but I can't recall any metal. At least none comparable to the others on the list.
Any list that has a Pantera guitarist in the top 10 is a bit suspicious in my opinion.

He's not metal, but he basically originated grunge rock.

Neil Young and Crazy Horse is basically the best of what Seattle has put out. He did flannels and feedback before it was the cool thing to do.
