Bad idea, for all the reasons listed above.
A contribution ICON would be good, maybe allow a larger avatar?

For those who say the colocated better start dishing out money, I say those who want the dedicated option should start dishing it out as well, AND keep dishing it out. :D

+ $298.00 2x Western Digital 74 GB Raptor hard drives (10,000 RPM... we'll set up in RAID 0 (mirrored raid) so we have 100% backup of our data at all times, and get a performance boost)
OK, you said your database has ballooned to 850mb. With the OS, you're probably looking at two gigs total at most. If you decide you want to expand the site later and incorporate photographic images or something else that takes up room, you're still going to be at a lot less than the 74gb.
On top of that, Raptors are way too expensive for what you get. You can go SCSI for a lot cheaper than that, with a lot better performance.
You can get 74gb 10k rpm SCSI drives for $70 each. For the same price as you want for your RAID 0 configuration, you could get four of the 74gb drives and set up a RAID 10 configuration. That way, you get the mirroring of RAID 0 AND the enhanced speed of RAID 1. Not to mention twice the space. Not to mention the enhanced throughput of SCSI as compared to SATA. (I prefer RAID5 myself, but if you don't have physical access to the server 24/7, it can be a tad troublesome when a disaster occurs).
If you wanted to go even faster, I have four 18gb 15,000rpm Fibre Channel drives. Never got around to getting the rackmount and interface that I would need to get them up and running.

Personally, I'd nix idea #1 there....
Maybe I'm a prude, but I don't like the idea of this turning into a pay porn site.
Read that too fast I think. Maybe I am a little dyslexic too. "Pay" looked like it started with a "g" and for a second there I thought maybe I had missed the discussion of MacBBS moving in a completely different direction.
Whew.

Lets see based on your numbers if 242 put $10 that would get you set up and cover hosting for a year. I like this site a heck of a lot more than our rivals site so I guess I could throw in something. Where do I send it to?

Hit the back button and go to the pinned topic titled "Pledge ..."
...and put in your pledge. This won't happen if we don't have the funding. It's not needed now, unless the other admins say otherwise. We just need to see how many are on board.
As for 242, we have enough members to get a dollar from everyone and make the option work.

Has the drive started? I ain't got much, but I'll send $5 paypal on Monday.
Any will help, but I think the best way to keep up with everything is to just make a pledge until it's needed.
Any thoughts Rick?

I voted Co and will be willing to contribute (perferrably after Memorial Day).
How are you setting up the karma deal? One perk for contributors might be give them additional karma points for use (since the karmas I've seen limit how many points you get).

Interesting. I'll do some more looking around at benchmarks; and check for RAID compat. with the barebones.

the 10K rpm+ drives I found on Newegg were only slightly faster and much more expensive AND incompatible with the RAID controller on the motherboard.

If you're planning to keep the same server as a long term solution, you'd be much better off building the server and co-locating as both solutions will cost the same over 3 years. (If you can raise the funds in time.)
