I just got my Ubuntu CD in the mail. It came with a live CD so that I could try it out without installing. Using the live CD, there is a problem. Starting up, everything is checked off as ok until near the end, then an error message comes up.

Error = Temporary problem in name resolution.

Then my screen goes blank and that's all I get. I thought maybe I just need to wait it out, but, after a half-hour, still nothing.
What's the problem?

sounds like an issue with the net... after a half hour it still didn't keep on going??

Did you try it more than once?

The net? I wasn't online, if that's what you mean. I booted from the CD and when it got to the error, it went black and quit. I've tried four or five times. Should I wait longer than half an hour?

I linked this thread to a place with lots of Ubuntu folks; so maybe we can get you some help.

In specific, I posted it on the LUGRadio forums ( http://forums.lugradio.org/index.php ).

And while you're at it download the latest LUGRadio episode and give it a listen. NCAAbbs even mirrors shows for LUGRadio.

mrBen:
OK - the 'temporary failure in name resolution' is a red herring - it's just an indication that he's not connected.

I think the bigger problem is likely that X is not starting properly. It's probably worth checking his video card/settings.

Woo:
I've only used the Hoary live CD once on a Mac bit I think I was asked if I wanted to set up a network now or leave it until later. If you choose 'now' then I would guess it will try to connect at some point. If you aren't connected to the Internet then I suggest 'later' would be a better option.

I think the second is the video card suggestion is right on. Do you know what video card is in your system? Also worthwhile... what is the vendor and model # of your monitor? X tends to fail if you have some non-mainstream monitor with unusual operating specs or if you have some REALLY bizarre video card.

My monitor is a ADI 5EP
I don't know what the vidio card is until I take the cover off.
I was never asked if I wanted to set up a network. I don't have broadband available, so I wasn't online. I ran Belarc Advisor and pasted the results here. Maybe you can figure what I have from that. This computer was built from three or four non-working ones.

I was able to bring up the live CD by using the expert mode. And that's a joke, I'm far from being expert.

I found out that windows ain't so bad. At least I can install things on windows. I'm just too damn dumb to do anything with linux.

I guess I'll be sticking with 2K Pro.

Expert mode bypasses many of the startup tools that auto-configure for you.

Your problem is the IDE Based graphics card. That's like saying you have a USB monitor... wacky wacky s***.
