Quote:Boston College's last Big East Conference season before joining the ACC in July is ending with bitterness because of an incident being called "Trophygate."

Boston College and Connecticut tied for first in the Big East's regular season. Boston College got the top seed for the conference tournament because it beat UConn in their lone game.

Commissioner Mike Tranghese presented UConn a championship trophy after it clinched a share of first place by beating Syracuse. Boston College got nothing, which upset Athletics Director Gene DeFilippo.

DeFilippo said the snub was an obvious attempt to punish Boston College for leaving for the ACC.

"Our coaches and our players had absolutely, positively nothing to do with Boston College's move to the Atlantic Coast Conference," DeFilippo said. "If they want to blame somebody they should blame me, and they should take it out on me, and not on our players and not on our coaches."

Tranghese said the slight was not intentional. He said that he and Big East officials happened to be in Storrs, Conn., to honor coaches Jim Calhoun of UConn and Jim Boeheim of Syracuse for their 700th coaching victories.

DeFilippo wasn't buying Tranghese's explanation. DeFilippo said that Tranghese didn't show up for the Big East women's tournament until the second game. Guess which school was playing in the first game?

"So you can figure that one out," DeFilippo said.

Please win the Big East tourney.
