Well opponents have 363 fouls for the year and UAB has 350 fouls. Seems that there would be a lot more fouls on UAB if they are fouling all the time.

Good game Tigers
That's because the officials are afraid to call significantly more fouls on one team than their opponent, regardless of how many were actually committed.

Props to UAB, Anderson has built a system that works. It takes advantage of the fact that the refs would rather get out of there in about 2 hours than actually do their job. UNLV and Arkansas won national championships playing that way...but that doesn't mean it's the way basketball should be played.

And yes, it *IS* fouling all the time. Watch a tape sometime and try to ignore the jerseys. They're clutching, grabbing, shoving, etc. on *EVERY* possession. All teams handcheck. UAB bodychecks.

My problem isn't with UAB, it's with the refs not calling the rulebook.
That goes for Memphis as well my friend. Marques Lewis was body checked more than a couple of times. One Memphis player would block the shot while another simultaneously body checked him... and no call. It is NOT fouling on every trip down, we dont care what you say. Kentucky last year we beat in essentially a home game for them... guess we didnt get the "homer" calls in that game, did we? What about the Washington game before that? UAB has simply learned how to push the button on fouls. They learn how to pressure and reach without drawing a foul call... there's absolutely nothing wrong with that. It is playing smart. We have led the nation in steals in 2003, 2004, and are currently first in 2005. We are averaging 12+ steals a game in 2005, and we had about 15 today against Memphis... that's not too far off from the average. You think UAB has had all of the officials in their pockets? Think again... we get on average that many steals in home games, away games, and with any combination of different officials. UAB has just learned how to play as tight as possible without getting many fouls (though we were called alot).

I never said they got homer officiating. I said the refs would rather get out of town quickly than actually call the game worth a crap. That happens home, road, everywhere.

Maybe you were not impressed with UAB today and frankly I wasn't either. As depleted as the Tigers are UAB should have won by 15 pts at least. Compliment to the Tigers that it didn't happen.

IT's very easy to say UAB fouls on every play. But they don't. They play you tight and will reach for the ball but it doesn't mean they're fouling every single time they do it.

D. Washington was pushing off with the forearm and carrying most of the game and it wasn't called. It wasn't more obvious than when he drove to the basket on Squeaky with a 1 min left in the game. An obvious push off with the forearm and it wasn't called. And McDonald fouled the Memphis guy that was shooting the 3 at the end of the game as well. Hell, Squealy had an over and back that was missed by the refs.

Overall it was a poorly officiated game and I for one I'm glad we finally got caught a break. We sure didn't catch a break in New Orleans the other night.

Great comeback and keep ya heads up with this program.

Speaking of knowing facts, you need to learn something. It takes a lot more than luck to beat the top seeded team in the country.
As far as Squeaky goes, you have obviously never watched him play because he picked apart teams much better than yours.
What kind of idiot are you? :stupid: Hunt is plainly a thug. Even if by some chance he didn't do what he was accused of, he should have brains enough to stay out of situations like that. Of course, Banks was his teammate so the bar hasn't been set very high as far as brains are concerned... 03-nutkick

To the rest of you who realized anything we did was to get in the players heads, good game and I look forward to the rivalry in the future. 04-cheers
Hunt is not a thug. The kid has never been in trouble before and everyone who knows him and his family is shocked.
We shall see what really happened when it is in Court but believe me, if he did this , he is guilty of losing his temper and doing something very much out of character and something I am sure he will pay dearly for. He is not a thug and calling him that before he has a chance to defend himself is really unecessary..

actually, it should have been a blocking foul on Johnson. Threw Washington off, which is partly why he missed the open shot.

How about Johnson's diving on the floor for the ball, and in the process taking out Hunt's legs? No call. Lewis had his shot blocked because he's limited with the ball near the basket, not because he was getting fouled.

If UAB fans cannot see their players bodying up, reaching in and hacking, etc., then Anderson has done just as good a job on them as he has on the officials.

UAB shot 20 free throws in the second half to our 7. So I don't want to hear how one-sided the calls were in our favor.

We lost the game because we allowed too many second half points in the first half, and we made 2 poor passes late in the game. Passes on the perimeter that were just thrown straight to the UAB player. That and the lucky bounces didn't go our way. But I like what I saw in the second half. Hopefully it will stick.

I'm not sure if you noticed, but we beat yall this year in basketball and have beat yall how many in football? How many? Go ahead and say it. 4+? And we didn't beat KU. They beat us in the SWEET SIXTEEN which yall failed to make. Don't even try and say we haven't accomplished anything. We didn't catch Kentucky on an off day. We didn't catch Washington on an off day. We didn't catch Cincy on an off day. We played good basketball and won because of it. Get over yourself.

We didnt say it was one-sided... yall did. As far as I could tell, both UAB and Memphis were in the double-bonus in the second half. If yall only hit 7 of your foul shots and we hit 20, that's your problem. UAB, at one point, was leading the league in FT % as a team. You guys are really reaching to try to pin this loss on bad calls. The ESPN commentators surely didnt seem to have a problem with the majority of the calls. And NO... ESPN does NOT like UAB. You might say they dont like Memphis, but they like yall more than they like us... believe me. Typically if they see bad officiating or unbalanced officiating, they'll call them on it on air. Yall had a number of unforced turnovers (travels and passes out of bounds for example) so you can NOT blame all of that on UAB. If yall want to sit and blame it on the refs, go right ahead... I've never seen the outcome of a basketball changed because their fans think the game was called unfairly. Would Calipari even agree with yall? Most of the time he seemed to be yelling at his own players rather than the officials...

ESPN commentators are probably greatly discouraged from favoring any team over another unless it's Duke Vitale doing color for a Blue Devils game.

Seems like. But check the box score.

Memphis had 22 Personal Fouls to UABs 19.

You must admit that alot of contact by UAB wasn't called.

There was alot of contact by Memphis that wasnt called either. There's alot of contact in basketball period... particularly in a physical rivalry. So what.

Balzer85,

I do not know why you are arguing this point.

1) If you cannot see that uab was fouling on every play you were not watching the game.

2) WE should play the same style from the begining IF it is allowed.

3) It is a compliment to uab that they can get away with this style

4) And finally,As you said.... Who cares?

It's when it happens in the flow of the game.

UAB rides the point guard all the way down the floor. That contact is a foul.

When the Refs decide that they just can't call every foul of that type; then the contact starts to achieve it's purpose.

Which is to lead to turnovers. Why do you think they call it 40 minutes of Hell?

Ok... Arkansas did it effectively... now UAB is starting to do it. It's clearly legal. By the way, not many of the Memphis turnovers came when yall were pushing the ball up the court... the turnovers came in your half-court sets...

Is it that much of a break? Why do you guys act like it's a huge surprise that UAB beat yall? Yall are almost at .500 ...in other words, almost as many teams have beaten yall as yall have beaten. I guess us UAB fans should take it as a compliment that yall are so worked up over this loss in particular.

I give props to the Memphis posters who haven't biatch or moaned about the loss and give us credit for winning the game.

You and a couple of others are just crying over spilled milk. It's your board and you're entitled to do so. But you're coming off like a crybaby.

I was sitting next to a Memphis fan who also thought Washington pushed off with the forearm. Threw Washington off my @$$. He had a clear drive to the bucket after that pushoff and should have made the shot. One of many no-calls and plenty of bad calls on both sides. And to be honest, if you go back and look at 3 pt shot at the end of the game you'll see the Memphis player kicking his leg out to draw contact. I thought it was a good no-call.

ChattTiger, were you complaining about the way UAB played in Memphis last year after the Tiger victory? Don't think so!

I'd think it was a good call if it was Memphis instead of UAB.

But the truth is that even if he threw his leg out; the UAB player fell on top of him. Watch the replay!!!

Watch the replay of the UK -vs.- Louisville game from a few weeks ago; same thing but the foul was called.

Even if a foul was called, that wouldve been a regular personal foul variety... not a foul in the act of shooting the 3pter. It wouldve been post-3pter and therefore just a 2-shot foul... still no overtime.

1. If you were at the game then how the hell do you know what the ESPN announcers were commenting on?

2. Did you sit with Cal on the bench?

Didn't think so.

So how the hell can you say WHO he was yelling at...it's called coaching; he does it in an excited manner.

And if he wasn't yelling at the refs, then what is this?

And most of us aren't bitching about your pathetic need to foul constantly simply to stay in the game, but the fact that your piece of sh!t coach and his mentor (as well as a few others) have helped turn college basketball into a sport quite similar to the display we see on the NBA courts and the "no blood- no foul" style found on inner-city courts all over the country, all with the blessing of NCAA refs who are too lazy to just call a damn foul and quit acting like it's subjective to WHEN the foul occurs.

Oh and no, it does NOT take a superior athelete to play that crap you CALL basketball, it takes a sorry ******* who will win at all costs.

It takes a superior athelete to fight through the constant hockey-style body checks, holds, hooks, and grabs and still compete to the point of nearly winning.

The BS your teams pull on the court are signs of lesser atheletes who are afraid to play straight up, or at least have a coach who is afraid to try it.
