why locked?
Just curious why the Imus thread was considered "way off topic" and locked? Personally, I haven't posted on it, but it involves media coverage of sports and language issues/limitations in talking publically about sports which is pretty relevant to a sports message board.

The Imus issue that seems to be rather overlooked is that language is inherently codified. Language subgroups exist everywhere. People develop ways of talking with people who they share understandings with. Whether it's Spanglish, your team's message board, people living on the coast of New England or in New Orleans. Imus was trying speak in the code of a language subgroup he did not belong to, respect or understand which led to the whole thing. It's not about censorship it's more subtle than that.

Also, funny how most of the people posting are more focused on dogging Jackson and Sharpton than anything else. True, Jackson and Sharpton are media pundits who have made a career on working the airways. However, neither is getting paid to basically denigrate people or spread ignorance. Jackson played a key role in integrating NFL upper management and coaching ranks. Without his efforts we wouldn't have had the Bears and Indy in the Super Bowl last year (probably wouldn't have Romeo Crennel running the Browns either, which might be a good thing for Browns fans, but that's another story). Sharpton has the clown thing kinda going on, but for anyone who paid close attention to the 2004 Democratic nominating process, they remember that he was one of the more astute, direct and interesting voices in that whole process. Now, maybe that says something about the state of the Democrats, but Fat Al was concise, engaging and willing to speak truths that other folks were too wimpy to address and he got some deserved respect for that.

Anyways, I won't post more on the Imus thing, but find it kinda funny that we can have dozens of posts on a fairly irrelevent athlete getting busted for a barfight or burglery, but a few posts on something that originates in how the media discusses sports gets locked up right away.

Does Jesse Jackson know that much about football? Nike had better sign him to their next campaign and make it similar to the old "Bo Knows..." campaign. "Jesse Knows...Football" and use the success of the Bears and Colts (although I think that takes away from what not only Dungy and Smith did, but also the players on the respective teams).

Jesse Jackson played football at the University of Illinois in the late 50s.

Jackson played at Illinois for one year before transferring to North Carolina A&T. Most online bios explain that he transferred because UI wouldn't let him play quarterback (his HS position) and A&T would.

I know that I've heard him speak about attending MLK's "Dream" speech with a "mixture of awe and fear" with the fear arising because he had skipped out on a day of two-a-days at A&T to drive up to DC and he thought his coach might kill him.

I locked the thread because of complaints received about comments by a poster that were considered racist and/or inflammatory.

But should a single poster's comments dictate what can be talked about on here? And if it's so offensive to the poster, maybe deleting the thread is a better resolution than just locking it (although that may make posters in the thread ever madder than if it was just locked).

Granted I'm a n00b, but I don't want the discussions on this board to be stifled because someone gets uncomfortable.

I generally prefer free speech.

IMHO, that thread should have not been locked.

I just want to add one thing about the Imus situation: Do you think if it was Mike and Mike or Dan Patrick or Colin Cowherd that said this, would ESPN have it on ALL the time? Imus said a very stupid thing, and the right action was done by CBS and MSNBC, and should it had gotten attention, but it's now the top story on Sportscenter every single day. ESPN knows that people who listen to Imus on Fox Sports Radio and whatever radio carriers had him would switch to ESPN Radio if he got all this negative publicity and knew he was fired. Do you think Stephen A Smith would be as pissed off about it if it was Mike Golic or Greenberg???

other thread
thanks for the input Karl

just saw the latter part of one of the other threads and it was getting pretty ignorant.

as to the earlier poster on this thread ... Jackson certainly doesn't deserve big credit for the Bears success. The point is that he used the media to play an effective role in addressing racism as it pertained for decades to NFL hiring and management practices. He's also someone with some sports credibility having been a college QB. Ego driven = yes, but let's not shift the blame onto him cause he's not the problem.

Sports radio mimics other media that have become more dependant on crassness, talking points, and fake "look at me. I'm a regular guy who will speak my mind" type talking heads. Dan Patrick went on his show and rambled on about the Toledo gambling thing like it was a fully proven and documented point shaving syndicate. Maybe, but little of that has been proven and nobody has even faced enough evidence to warrant a trial so far.

As for Steven Smith, who I find much less interesting than he finds himself, I think if he slipped into a phony Southern drawl and called an impressive underdog NASCAR team "a bunch a backwoods hicks that cozy up to their cousins" or something like that. He would also face a serious backlash and possibly lose his job, too.

Do cowboy hats really make you seem more down to earth?

oops, I said I wouldn't comment again

I told my son just a minute ago that the ONE thing I hope to see come out of this is that Revs. Sharpton and Jackson and the many civil rights people who are so rightly angry about Imus' comments will put a similar effort into effecting change among "their own people" with respect to that kind of language. Blatant disrespect for self and others such as calling women hos, etc., CAN bring Imus-type attempts at humor, which are guaranteed to blow up in their faces. Cosby's comments about responsibility and so on raised a firestorm last year, but his comments need to be repeated by MANY more to be effective and helpful.

Ego driven = yes, but let's not shift the blame onto him cause he's not the problem. I blame him for this country becoming more polarized. His many fake claims of "racism"(for $$$) are having that effect. If he would FINALLY admit that there are MAJOR problems in the African American community and help start reversing those problems, you will see less polarization.

I'm not gonna do the research but NFL head coaching and upper management was an almost exclusively white club until jackson and others got engaged with the issue and brought a lot of change.

Don't want to get too involved in the other topics as this is a sports board, but there's a lot of good things in the black community and the problems amongst poor blacks are rooted in much more complex social and economic history than Jesse Jackson or anyone is gonna change through some talk about responsibility.

I've yet to hear a rapper call a woman a "nappy headed ho". Yes, the word "ho" is way overused but pairing it with "nappy head" is profoundly racist.

Most rap music is purchased by white people. Secondly, latinos, asians and native americans as a group purchase more than blacks, as well.

There is a plethora of mature, creative and engaging rap music out there, but it gets little promotional, industry or media support. Many rappers are effectively blacklisted for political content, but MTV, et al will promote sexist less talented crap all day if it has a good beat and people watch it. the Black Eyed Peas were well respected but a commercial failure for years as a group who emphasized uplifting socially conscious hip hop. When they added a barely dressed white girl who excels in raps about her body and sex appeal and switched to sex and club scene themes they went multi platinum and got enormous media opportunities.

If you are gonna be knee jerk critical of hip hop and black pop culture please go rent Dave Chappelle's Block Party. it's a fun movie and provides a great intro to what the culture is really about and the artists who are well loved and carefully listened to but don't get on the TV or radio.

damn, i posted again on the topic and only superficially referenced sports, sorry Karl
