Local coverage of EMU
I posted a question about where each fan gets its MAC school's info on the main MAC board. Huroncowboy suggested I ask about the Echo and A2 News' coverage on Eastern.
What do you guys think?
As Cowboy said on the other board, I see the A2 News has a lot of coverage on UM, however I also see about three stories on EMU per week, which is good. Better than nothing?
Cowboy also pointed out that the Echo bashes the program.
Since we are on message boards, obviously we are true EMU supporters. I'd suggest writing, whether you like what you are seeing or don't, to the papers. Let 'em know what up.

Sorry Ypsi, I guess some of the guys who did comment on it on M-Dead don't want to comment about here.
I also will say EMU for wanting to be Detroit's MAC team doesn't get much ink in either of the Detroit newspapers.

EMU's biggest problem with media coverage is that they do not have their own market. The local sceen is dominated by UM and the regional area is dominated by the Detroit pro teams, UM, and MSU. I'd bet that the average sports fan does not even know that EMU is D1 - the same as UM (not financially of course). Toledo/BG probably have the best media coverage amongst MAC schools in that they get local paper and TV coverage regularly in a fairly large market.

Yea I don't really expect 2, 4 or 7 spending much time on the Eagles, but since there is no more Ypsilanti City paper, the A2 News has to pick up the slack. And for the most part I think it did. I saw football game stories in there most weeks. The Echo had a game story every week and now covers the basketball teams.

I might the current edition of the Echo which you can view on line has an article about EMU student attendance at hoops and football. Its a step in the right direction.

I didn't see this thread on the main MACbbs board, so i'll just post my response here.
Locally NIU gets tons of coverage in the Daily Chronicle, The Midweek News, Beacon News (Aurora, IL), The Northern Star (NIU student newspaper), and many others.
Regionally NIU gets at least one or two articles per week in the RockFord Register Star
Nationally NIU gets a lot of press in the Chicago Sun-Times, especially during college football season.
NIU gets a fair amount of press in the Chicago Tribune as well, but not as much as the Sun-Times gives us.
I also know that NIU had at least two articles about our football team in the New York Times last year.

The ironic thing about media coverage of EMU is that when a team makes it onto the national stage (e.g. NCAA Tourny for Men's BBall) the Detroit TV stations and newspapers will show up and put out stories like EMU is really one of the Detroit home teams. They write reports like they cover EMU on a daily basis. When EMU is down the Detroit boys are nowhere to be seen.
Respect and attention must be earned in these parts.
