If you market it well and give it time, a "spirit" character can take off. For instance, WKU is the Hilltoppers. A long time ago we did have a man in a top hat kinda as a mascot but didn't last real long. In 1979 Western fans were introduced to "Big Red" who is nothing like a Hilltopper or anything else. He is just a "spirit" mascot. And he is probably one of the top most well known and identifiable mascots.

We had some football players, cheerleadrs & yes Red come to my house for the party. The kids loved it. The players were class acts. They played with the kids & Red put on a big show.

But again, We're the Indians :frown:
Cool story, but I thought you guys had become the Arkansas State Slim Jims when I saw that thing at the game last September. 03-wink

Topper Jeff -- I agree with you on that one; I see that fat, red charater on TV frequently. Who knows one day we may see RED on TV. Maybe the two SBC REDS can battle it out for SBC spirit character supremacy with Cayenne bringing up the rear :D :D :D

I have nothing against the Cayanne Pepper mascot, but most people around the nation associate CRAWFISH with Louisiana and the Cajun culture.
It would be great for Louisiana-Laffayette if they could create a marketable crawfish logo and mascot.

Yep, I associate that area of the country with crawfish and beer. Although it sounds obscene there are those who 'suck the heads'.

I don't understand why "Big Red" is so popular. He looks like a used feminine napkin. The ASU and UL mascots look like some biology experiment gone wrong. Cayenne scares my 6 year old. Come to think of it all of our mascots are pretty bad. My vote for the worst is the pegasus winged horse at MTSU.

Well, we all expected you to hate MTSU's mascot more than anyone else's. You have "I hate the Blue Raiders" written all over your face, RCajun90.

Finding a mascot that does all three of these things is very VERY hard to do:

1. Reflects the regionality of the area and the nature of the institution.

MT's "Lightning" is a symbol from Greek Myth. He was the bearer of Zeus' lightning and thunder. Nashville is considered the Athens of the South and a replica of the Parthenon is located there. Middle Tennessee State soars academically in Agriculture/Equestrian studies as well as Aerospace.

2. Appears strong and fearless and relates well to older fans and the students.

Let me tell you that Lightning does that. The students and alumni love him!

3. Does not appear so frightening that kids are afraid of him.

The MT kids love our mascot.

I think our marketing department made a perfect decision with Lightning! Even his color schemes are awesome! He is a one-of-a-kind mascot and even though you may not like him, everyone else does. In fact, you're probably the only person in the entire world that doesn't like him.

What in the heck do you mean I hate MTSU? I post on your board all the time. In fact I made a post asking about how you guys came to be called the Blue Raiders and why you use that winged horse mascot. I don't like it. It reminds me of some character from the Care Bears. If you read my post I don't like the Cajuns cayenne either. 05-nono

I'm the only one in the entire world that thinks a flying horse as a stupid mascot? Maybe. You need to lighten up.

The Indian mascot is a tricky one. I think the world is entirely too PC these days... but I also can see where some Native Americans object to the old school use of "Indians" as a school mascot. Not all of the depictions were favorable.

I think Red is a great idea. Sure, he's not connected with the Indian mascot directly... but he serves his purpose well. He represents the athletic program and can interact with the fans directly. It's hard to do that by using any form of real, live Native American mascot.

ULM attempted to use an inflatable Indian mascot a few years ago and it just looked tacky. Now, we have a traditional mascot (big head on a human body) that anyone outside of the south would probably be offended by. (He is a walking, talking cartoon of an Indian.) I think our lack of success on the playing field is the only reason we haven't received more heat than we have.

Long live Jumpin' Joe. I remembered him as a child, and I'll never let him succumb to the PC crowd.

Most of the MT grown-ups I talk to don't really like Lightnin', but the kids seem to like it.

We used to have a pretty cool, Zorro(sp?)-like character that would ride out on a black horse.

And years ago we had a guy in a confederate uniform. That went the way of PC.

After the Zorro character we had a costumed hound name Old Blue.

Since the winged horse is in our logo, I guess we'll have to stick with him for now.

I'd really like to see a Raider Man on a horse at football games.

We shall see what the future holds.

I do like the idea of a crawfish for the Cajuns. That would be very unique and identifiable.
