D. T. McDowell, who was the star of the Trojans’ 2004 recruiting class, has decided to pursue a career in Major League Baseball. McDowell, who was taken by the California Angels in the 20th round of this year’s draft, had planned to play both baseball and football for the Trojans, and was expected to compete for the starting QB job in 2005.

In case you missed it, the conference recently decided to reduce the league’s number of designated games from 12 to 4 this upcoming season. Because some of the Sun Belt schools had already set their schedules prior to the addition of Troy this season, the conference encountered an unbalanced conference schedule (each team does not play every team in conference play). In an effort to try and make sure that each team was given the most fair conference slate as possible, the league’s athletic directors wanted a minimum amount of games versus non-Sun Belt opponents to count against the conference standings. As a result, only two teams outside the Sun Belt (UTEP and Florida Atlantic) can determine the conference champion, with these four designated games remaining: NMSU @ UTEP, ULM @ Florida Atlantic, Florida Atlantic @ Troy, and NMSU @ Florida Atlantic. (On a related note, Florida Atlantic actually joins the Sun Belt in 2005.)
