Russell Westbrook
Has anyone heard any more info on this kid? Kent, Wyoming and Creighton tried to sign him last year to a LOI but he didn't want to make a decision that early. I know PAC 10 teams are now interested in him. Any word from an insider if we are still in the running?

I don't think we are in the running without the two scholarships next year

Scholarships or no, Westbrook has been upgraded from a ** recruit to a **** recruit, which means that mid-major teams can forget about signing him.

Beat me to it, Kentville. From The Insiders

Quote:Utah, New Mexico, New Mexico State, Creighton, Kent State, LMU, San Diego and Pepperdine have offered. Washington, Miami, Washington State and Oregon are showing interest.

He visited, liked the campus, but thought it was "too cold." And that's when he was a two star. The chances of us getting him now, rides or not, are very slim.

RE: Russell Westbrook
I wonder what happened to this Westbrook kid that visited Kent State? Lucky for us we did not tie that guard spot up and we got MVP Al Fisher the next year.

I hear he got lucky and UCLA had a scholarship open up when they lost Jordan Farmar to the NBA. So he might have played at UCLA

RE: Russell Westbrook
It really is crazy to think Westbrook was committed to Kent entering his Sr season, Anthony Davis was committed to CSU as a Jr, and Dambrot had a personal relationship with CJ McCollum when he was im HS but never offered him. Even OU had Caris Levert committed up until late in his Sr season when Groce left for Illinois. You could build an NBA super team out of near misses for the mid majors in Ohio.

I couldn't watch a Murray St game this year without thinking this is what it would've been like it Westbrook ended up at Kent.

Nothing means anything until a player signs an NCAA letter of intent. I remember in 1969 coach Truitt had Nick Weatherspoon, who may have been the best player in Ohio, on campus but he ended up at Illinois.

McCollum was begging to come to Kent State. We didn't want him either.

RE: Russell Westbrook
McCollum was an unusual case. He was a classic late bloomer. By the time he "bloomed", Lehigh had their hooks in him. Only one D I Ohio school offered him. I can't remember who. Either BG or Akron, I think. On the other hand, no D I schools wanted Trevor Huffman except Kent State (very belatedly), and all-Ohio Eric Glenn was passed over by most schools, but Jim McDonald wanted him. Recruiting is an inexact science, to say the least. Even the best talent evaluators have poor "batting averages". It's like the NFL draft where first round picks are often busts and undrafted players sometimes shine.

Baseball is even worse for evaluation. Mike Trout, who is the greatest player of his generation by a lot, was drafted 25th overall.
