UNT Notebook: Mean Green to stick to rotation vs. Texas
Several positions still up for grabs
08:59 AM CDT on Wednesday, September 1, 2004
The rotation system the North Texas football team has used during its preseason scrimmages will continue when the Mean Green takes on Texas in its season opener on Saturday.
The Mean Green will use at least two players at fullback and will also rotate four offensive tackles, a number of linebackers and a few running backs to spell starter Patrick Cobbs.
The rotation system will be in place not only because the team has yet to settle several position battles, but it is also expected to help the Mean Green stay fresh in key games this season.
"We are more prepared to play a team like Texas than we have been in the past," UNT coach Darrell Dickey said. "What we learned in the past was that we needed to play more guys. We found out that we play better that way."
Joel Foster, Jeremy Brown, Weston Thaggard and Damion Nobles are all expected to see time at offensive tackle.
Former Liberty standout James Mitchell and converted linebacker Chris Nevins will see time at fullback, while UNT continues to look for a starter.
Dickey said freshman wide receivers Brock Stickler and Roy Covington could also see action.
Longview Spring Hill freshman Jamario Thomas and sophomore Kevin Moore will rotate to spell Cobbs, last year’s national rushing champion.
Signing solid recruiting classes in the last several seasons has improved UNT’s depth and ability to rotate players.
Several of the players expected to see time in UNT’s first game are members of the Mean Green’s incoming recruiting class. UNT linebacker Brandon Monroe joined the team this fall and is expected to start against Texas.
UNT has won the last three Sun Belt Conference titles and is favored to win the title again this season.
