Turbeville column: Death Valley not any fun for Indians

BATON ROUGE, La. — Saturday night in Death Valley was an experience Arkansas State won’t soon forget, no matter how hard the Indians might try.

Tiger Stadium lived up to its billing on a warm evening as 91,611 fans, just above capacity, turned out to watch an expected mismatch. The purple-and-gold masses got exactly what they wanted, especially those who had LSU beating the six-touchdown spread, as the sixth-ranked Tigers roared to a 53-3 victory.

ASU received a $450,000 guarantee for its trouble. Maybe the experience will somehow have long-range benefit for the youthful Indians, a number of whom were playing only their second college football game in one of the nation’s most intimidating venues.
But the important thing about being in Baton Rouge on this particular night, at least from an ASU perspective, is it keeps the Indians from having to show up here next year.

ASU was initially scheduled to visit Oklahoma this year, LSU in 2005. Circumstances allowed the Indians to get out of the OU game, which was taken by Houston, and advance their Baton Rouge trip to this year.

Houston absorbed a 63-13 beating in ASU’s place at OU. The Indians took their lumps Saturday night against the defending BCS national champions, but at least they cleared a place on next year’s schedule, one that won’t be filled by the likes of LSU.
