Arkansas State doesn’t have to worry about an All-American quarterback with Heisman Trophy aspirations and an NFL future this time when it visits Ole Miss.
Instead, the Indians have three quarterbacks to consider and none of them are much like the others. Which of them will start and play the bulk of the way, though, is perhaps the biggest unknown.
Ole Miss coach David Cutcliffe said the Rebels haven’t solidified their starting quarterback yet, even though they are four games into the season. Ole Miss has stumbled to a 1-3 start, its only win a 26-23 overtime nailbiter two weeks ago against Vanderbilt, as its quarterbacks have struggled to replace former QB Eli Manning.
Junior quarterback Micheal Spurlock started the first two games but the Rebels lost at home to Memphis and then at Alabama. Cutcliffe turned to sophomore Ethan Flatt, who guided Ole Miss past Vanderbilt but then threw four interceptions and lost a fumble in a 37-32 loss at Wyoming last Saturday.
With neither of his two quarterbacks performing at a satisfactory level, Cutcliffe said the starting situation remains uncertain.
Flatt is considered the starter for ASU but Cutcliffe is even considering giving redshirt freshman Robert Lane his first snaps of the season. Lane was a Parade Magazine All-American in high school at Neville High in Monroe, La.
