RECAP.....

The more records Travis Prentice sets,
the more he serves notice to the Heisman Trophy voters.

Prentice became the NCAA's all-time leader in points and
touchdowns, running for three scores and a career-best 376 yards
as Miami of Ohio defeated Akron, 32-23, in a Mid-American
Conference matchup.

Prentice ran off left end for a career-high 75-yard touchdown
run in the first quarter, had a two-yard run in the second and
broke Ricky Williams' Division I-A record for total touchdowns
with a 72-yard scoring run late in the fourth to give Miami a
32-23 lead.

He has 76 total touchdowns in his four years with the RedHawks,
including 71 rushing scores, which is one short of Williams'
mark.

In addition, Prentice has 456 career points, breaking Williams'
record by four. He also extended his own NCAA record of
multi-touchdown games to 25.

Prentice moved up to fifth on the all-time rushing list with
5,364 yards, passing Darren Lewis and former Heisman Trophy
winners Herschel Walker and Archie Griffin. He trails No. 4
Charles White by 234 yards with two games remaining.

Miami (6-3, 5-1 MAC East) took a 19-17 lead on a safety early in
the third quarter. The RedHawks extended their lead to 25-17
just under three minutes later when Mike Bath connected with
Mike Sullivan on a seven-yard scoring strike. The two-point
conversion failed.

Akron cut the lead to 25-23 in the fourth quarter on a four-yard
touchdown run by Brandon Payne, set up on a blocked punt by Ray
Pung at the Miami 40-yard line. But quarterback James
Washington failed to run it in on the two-point conversion
attempt.

Miami racked up 512 yards of offense, including 398 on the
ground, in posting its third straight conference win and third
win in its last four games overall. The RedHawks remained in
second place in the MAC East behind undefeated, 12th-ranked
Marshall.

Washington completed only 11-of-23 passes for 233 yards, but
threw three interceptions. Payne had 67 yards rushing on 18
carries with two touchdowns.

Akron (6-4, 4-3) dropped its second straight game after winning
its previous four.

Too bad mid-majors and I-AA Heisman contendors (Adrian Peterson) start the race behind major conference competitors. I think that there has been a few times when a lower conference/division Heisman candidate was scrubbed even though he deserved it.

That was quite the performance! CMU hasn't had a back that dominant since Brian Pruitt. Terrance Jackson and James King, however, have become game-changing forces...

Reminds me of the 1985 game I attended at EMU when George Swarn run through the mud (worst field I ever saw!) for 326 yards, which I think may have been an NCAA record at the time. The EMU field was a cow pasture before they renovated and put in astroturf in the early 90's.

You forgot to mention how Miami's offensive lineman TACKLED our safety Jon Eaton. Of course there was no call. Had we gotten that call we would have won the game.

Coach Owens sent the tape in to complain and the referee was suspended. You can see why.

No wonder nobody likes Miami. The next year they came to Akron and got pounded.

I was there....as an Akron fan....one of the worst no-calls I've ever seen. Prentice did have a heck of a game, but the Zips got robbed!

Chryst, two years later and you kids are still *****ing about a no-call? By a MAC official? I've said it before and I'll say it again: there were plenty of no-calls made during that game. But like ANY MAC game, the officials were equally bad that day, and Akron benefitted from no-calls that game as much as -- if not more than -- Miami did. Please remember that the officials called a safety against Akron in the third quarter when the Miami player CLEARLY covered the ball inbounds for what should have been a TD.

And a side question -- if nobody in the MAC likes Miami because the officials suck, why does nobody in the MAC like Akron? Because the timekeepers are ugly?

Hey RedSteve,
I think we debated this on the Sportsonly board for weeks a few years ago. My comments above were kind of tongue in cheek. Just seeing if you folks remembered our ire. What do you say, can the MAC go 2-0 against Iowa???? That would certainly help the whole Akron-Miami love affair....

Just one comment: from what I've read, a great jeer for Iowa players would be anything to do with alcohol. According to the preseason mags, at least three Hawkeyes have questionable immediate futures, due to drunk-driving busts.

The yahoo site didn't have the rushing stats for the Texans in their box score. But Prentice did lead the team in receptions, which is great IMO.

Prentice reminds me alot of Keith Byars, and some NFL team should use him in that role.
