RECAP.....
The more records Travis Prentice sets,
the more he serves notice to the Heisman Trophy voters.
Prentice became the NCAA's all-time leader in points and
touchdowns, running for three scores and a career-best 376 yards
as Miami of Ohio defeated Akron, 32-23, in a Mid-American
Conference matchup.
Prentice ran off left end for a career-high 75-yard touchdown
run in the first quarter, had a two-yard run in the second and
broke Ricky Williams' Division I-A record for total touchdowns
with a 72-yard scoring run late in the fourth to give Miami a
32-23 lead.
He has 76 total touchdowns in his four years with the RedHawks,
including 71 rushing scores, which is one short of Williams'
mark.
In addition, Prentice has 456 career points, breaking Williams'
record by four. He also extended his own NCAA record of
multi-touchdown games to 25.
Prentice moved up to fifth on the all-time rushing list with
5,364 yards, passing Darren Lewis and former Heisman Trophy
winners Herschel Walker and Archie Griffin. He trails No. 4
Charles White by 234 yards with two games remaining.
Miami (6-3, 5-1 MAC East) took a 19-17 lead on a safety early in
the third quarter. The RedHawks extended their lead to 25-17
just under three minutes later when Mike Bath connected with
Mike Sullivan on a seven-yard scoring strike. The two-point
conversion failed.
Akron cut the lead to 25-23 in the fourth quarter on a four-yard
touchdown run by Brandon Payne, set up on a blocked punt by Ray
Pung at the Miami 40-yard line. But quarterback James
Washington failed to run it in on the two-point conversion
attempt.
Miami racked up 512 yards of offense, including 398 on the
ground, in posting its third straight conference win and third
win in its last four games overall. The RedHawks remained in
second place in the MAC East behind undefeated, 12th-ranked
Marshall.
Washington completed only 11-of-23 passes for 233 yards, but
threw three interceptions. Payne had 67 yards rushing on 18
carries with two touchdowns.
Akron (6-4, 4-3) dropped its second straight game after winning
its previous four.
