Today is was signing day .... lets hope the new additions can make heavy impact on the OL and DL and have some playmakers. Looks like we got some good size on the offensive line for once and some athletic linebackers too, just not real big, which is a bad thing against many of the large OL in D1. For the most part I would not expect them to make an impact this year, but at least improve the overall team and its attitude and push the upperclassmen. The team should be starting full go winter conditioning and lifting this week and then spring ball is just right around the corner. I am sure this winter program will be tougher than ever before not only to get to the next level but to make sure everyone believes in getting there. It will be interesting to see how Cribbs and even the new guy formerly of ND will react in the coming months and over the summer.

I have a few questions for anyone who knows what's going on with the football program:

1. How good is Antwon Smith? How do you assess his chances as a starting QB next season?

2. How good will the O line be next year?

3. What are the prospcets for our running game? Do we know anything about Alston's potential return?

4. Assess the chances that the defense can raise its game to "average" in the MAC. As much as I hate to see Elam in the program, I have to admit ND was disappointed that they had to dismiss him because he showed some promise as a red shirt freshman- the only year he played.

5. Has anyone bolted from last year's team?

Only time will tell whether Pees recruited good players who will help the program. Because Kent had a limited number of scholarships and signed three quarterbacks last year, Pees went for linemen this year.

Pees stated, "We didn't have a lot of scholarships to give, so we looked to plug some holes left by graduation. I feel we did a great job of recruiting our needs, especially linemen, wide receivers and linebackers. I'm particularly pleased we were able to get some big players on defense."

One of the 13 signed by KSU is 6-1, 300-pound defensive lineman Phil McNeal from Warren Harding. He finished last season with 11 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Kent also signed 6-4, 295-pound defensive lineman Dalton Memel from Washington, W. Va., a Class AAA first-team all-state pick who led his team to the state title with 148 tackles and 15 sacks.

I know that Miami is happy in recruiting Jared Elliott, a 6-5, 210-pound product out of Page High School in Franklin, TN. Commenting on Elliott, Terry Hoeppner stated, "We ended up with a quarterback we are really excited about.

1. I think Antwan can be just as good a true "quarterback" as Cribbs, or even better. He is not real big, which hurts, but has good vision, a strong arm, and great touch. He is a passionate player and always wanted the ball this past year, and was upset when he had a chance to score and he didn't. He has not played enough reps at QB so I am not sure of his decision making or poise in the pocket, but can be a good leader. If he ends up the starter, you won't see the improvising, and magical plays Cribbs makes, but he will move around, escape pressure and make plays. Doug Martin's offensive system will continue to be a good fit for Smith as it is for Cribbs, a strong running game with good route running receivers and the frequent long balls to make plays should only get better. Antwan came into the Penn State game after Josh was hurt and led a good drive down the field in the first quarter until he dislocated his shoulder and his throw wasn't the same until the last few games. It was almost a seamless transition when he came in if I remember correctly, if he had not gotten hurt, that game may have been another Big 10 upset. Now if Daryl Polk has to start, its a different story. He can throw a good long ball and is good as a back up, but his will not be a complete starting quarterback.

2. The OL graduated 2 seniors this year. Center Steve Smith was robbed in not getting any post season MAC recognition, he went from a scrawny 215 freshman year, lighter than me, to arguably the best center in the MAC. Shaun Sarrett also a key loss, he had great desire and would always hit you in the mouth, he complimented the line well at guard. So they return 3 full time starters with 1 that started when Jason Andrews was hurt. Andrews, Bandiera, Rafdal, and Carter all have alot of experience, quickness and strength and will only get better. They have to step up to improve the running game. The guys that have been backups have to step up too. We will need another starter who has yet to emerge. There are some guys that have potential, Geohagen, McKenzie, Manning, and the redshirts and true freshman. Maybe even the one lineman from Hargrave, he may be able to make an instant impact but who knows. I see the line being just as good or most likely better than last year, they have great coaches working with them. I think they will play better as a unit but they need individuals to step up to the challenge.

3. The running game will be they key to the O next year. The young guys like Beverly and Tillman got some great experience this year being thrown into the fire and they will be much better, they are fast. Eddie Beccles also rejoined the team midway through last year after quitting the year before, call it a bad decision and immaturity. He missed it and wanted back bad, so coach Pees brought him back on the scout team and there are some things between them that Eddie must satisfy. Once he gets back in the games, he will be a huge boost for the running game. As a defensive player it was a huge challenge each week going against Beccles and Alston (once he was mostly healthy) on the scouts. They are the fastest and quickest backs on the team, and they greatly helped the D, though it may not have shown on Saturdays :crying: I have not heard anything definite on Alston's return yet. I am pretty sure he must graduate this summer to regain another year of eligibility, he was a Prop 48 his first year. But we cannot count on his return ... it is up in the air and the injury bug always gets him.
But the key to the running game is the line. When we were successful last year on O we could run it, and when we weren't we couldn't run the ball. For as many big plays as Cribbs and the receivers made, it always comes back to running the ball. The line needs to be more consistent, and use their lack of size to their advantage by being quick and in the right position. Recruiting size this year helps, but it probably won't show this season. Its hard to say how good the running game will be, we have excellent backs, its a matter of getting the line to work as a unit and take pride in their work. Things like that will be developed this offseason.

4. I see the defense much better this year. It hurts to say that now that I have left 03-nutkick I think a simple change in philosophy and attitude will go a long way. Basically two new DC's, Retskis and Wauford, will change the outook. It will be interesting to see if there is a new or modified defensive scheme or if Pees keeps the same scheme. It will be difficult for him to keep his hands out of the D, because that is what he is, but I hope he realizes that a more hands off approach will be better. It is important when you bring in a new coordinator to give him control, so he can make a real impact.

Even though defense is a team oriented task, we had and still have some bad attitudes that are very individual. That was a big problem last year, guys were making bad decisions and were not doing what they were supposed to be doing. When everyone had their job done, we were great, like against Akron in the end, UCF, or at times against UCONN and Miami. Depending on the style of D this is good or bad. Pees D was gap responsibility oriented, everyone had a gap, area, or zone. You did your job knowing that the next guy would do the same. Well the problem was the next guy was sometimes trying to do everything, and in doing that he opens something up and bam, big play. We have great athletes all over the field on D, we just have to use them correctly. We still lack size everywhere on D, but are fast. I guess its hard to have both, but tough to compete with the large lines and receivers you run into now and then. The secondary looks like it will get a boost from recruits and additions, the LB will be solid, but the DL needs improvement. They lost some key leaders, Williams and Crock, and they still lack size. But athletes like Muir, Attieh, Rice will only get better and there are alot of redshirts ready to step in. The new DL coach Wauford will make a huge impact. Many of the DL were upset when Kurt Barber left for Utah and was replaced by Larry McDaniel. After Barber, who played at USC and the NFL and was an excellent coach, left, there was a big dropoff. In the end, we will be at least "average" if they can learn to just play together, play fast, tackle, play intense, and do what they are supposed to do every play. Hopefully the new blood will start that change. We will see in the spring game!

5. The only loss I currently know of is Elijah Brooks, RB. A tough loss for us because he was such a tough guy. May not have been the fastest, quickest, or biggest, but he was very difficult to bring down. I think he was up upset that the freshmen were playing more than he was and didn't feel he was treated right. I think he was going to either Delaware or Vermont? I'm not sure. Anthony Henriquez was also trying to regain another year of eligibility by graduating in 4 years as a Prop 48, but I don't think that is going to happen from what I have seen and heard. I have not talked to any of the guys about this in awhile so I am not sure of anyone else being off the team, and maybe Elijah changed his mind, but I doubt it.

Hey FIDO,

will soph safety and returnman drager get a chance at running back? If you feel comfortable answering this question please do...If we start to win the close ones, and are like 6-4 by week ten or so forth, will and can Dix be expected to have at least 21k per game, or by at least late season games...is thier enough latent interest among the campus to support once winning takes place...Kent is such a great campus and I think the facilities are very solid, maybe no PSU or Pitt state of the art but I think they are very very nice compared to conference and non conference teams of similar make-up

I am not sure if Drager will get a shot at RB or not, I know that is what he played in HS. He is a great athlete and adapted fairly well to playing DB, he is going to be good along with Gary Ham, if they both stay on D together. I think the coaches put him on D because they thought they had enough/better talent at RB, so who knows. He pretty much won the game against Akron with his punt return at the end ... true freshman in his first game, what a start.

Regarding the attendance, I truly have no idea what it will take to get people to come to games. You can talk marketing all you want and how bad our department is, but as far as the team is concerned you have to WIN to get support. There are people out there that do care about the program now, but to get everyone else we have to WIN. It is in the back of everyone's mind that the crowds are not big enough and it would be great to pack the Dix. Its tough playing one week in front of 100k at PSU or OSU, at Pitt at Heinz field, or even at Marshall or Miami and then coming back to our 6000 people, though we were grateful to those that do come. I dont remember what game it was but someone made a comment on the sidelines of a Saturday day game that it felt like we were playing in a HS JV game because of how quiet it was. But I do not want the players worrying about fan numbers, those types of things are beyond their control. There is no recent tradition to get people to come to the games if we lose. And truthfully I don't think even if we do win we will get the support we deserve. The campus and the city overall lack school spirit. It used to make me sick walking around campus and seeing Miami, Ohio, OSU, Akron, etc. shirts. As far as I am concerned it is up to the team and staff to get the butts in the seats. If we win, they will come.

The facilities are fairly nice compared to other mid-major or MAC schools. Not the best, but nice. The fieldhouse is a great asset to the program and all the sports. The new turf in there is great ... even though that turf is my enemy. I tore my ACL my redshirt fresh. year on that old rug. The Dix is good. The east side stands are much nicer. The new locker room is great, good for recruiting and making a nicer atmosphere. The guys always want it better though, build a cement east side stands with better locker room/offices/training rooms and to get the new grassturf field in the stadium. I do think that will happen in the coming years, there is just the problem of relocating and building a new field hockey field.

FIDO -

Well, for what it's worth, you made me feel better about next year. Thanks ALOT.Your report reminded me about how many players bust their butts. I am glad Beccles is back; thought he had promise the year before. Didn't Brooks get significant playing time last year? Seems surprising he'd bolt due to lack of time. Oh, well.

I hope the football tream looks at the hoops program. I was at Kent from 1973-77. In my freshman year, Kent started Jack Lambert who alone was worth the ticket. The offense had Kokal at QB, Tinker at WR and Poole at RB. Dix was packed every week. Students and townies went to all the home games. That's just what you did on Saturday. Basketball, on the other hand, was dismal. I think I attended one game in my entire four years. We lost badly and I never returned. My point? Kent's fans are like everywhere else. Win, and they will come.

FIDO,

I really appreciate your insights as a former player. You and punt16 are a great asset here as most of us are just fans and only get little info from the papers and what we can gleen from here. Thanks for joining!

A little perspective on attendance from me as well. I was at KSU in 1987. In 1987, the team challenged for the MAC title and Dix was packed. That's how I got hooked on KSU football. I kept hoping and attending all through the 1990s (ugh!) and the level of the team is soooo much better now under Coach Pees. I just hope that he can get them to the next level. Unfotunately, the MAC has leapfrogged us just as we are getting competitive. The teams over the last 2 year s with Cribbs at the helm may have won the MAC 10 years ago. However, the MAC has changed. Hope we can catch up ...

I was going to say the same thing...Thank you FIDO for your insight and hands on experience...I really have loved Kent football for a long time even though I have no formal connections to Kent itself (at least anymore)...thanks for the answers and expect to get swamped with questions from me and others 03-wink
