I understand the opportunity to make more money and to quit having to deal with the crap that is Kent State football, etc., but this is bush. He just screwed the program with this move. If he wanted to take another job, he should have resigned at the end of last season so that we could have actually recruited a decent coach. Who wants and would be available for this job now? I think that I have lost what little respect I had left for him.

Flash, I think there may be more here than meets the eye. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think there may have been some issues on the table that he and LK and CC could not get around. That's what the timing tells me. I doubt that it just came out of the blue--that he gets an offer and takes it--I bet there is more to the story.
Then again, we may never know the whole story.
Whatever it is, and you may be right, too, it's very bad for Kent football for next season.
Like we need that. 03-banghead

This is no doubt a setback, but I believe that the Kent football program will still be able to more forward. According to Kennedy,

There are plenty of good assistants who will jump at the opportunity to be head coach regardless of the timing or the school involved.

I agree with axeme there has got to be more involved but from Pees perspective it was proabably a no brainer as:
- he's got the opportunity to coach with the world champs, who will be good for quite some time.
- he was 17-51 (25% winning %), staring at getting canned if he isn't at least 500 in 2004. Not many other coaches with a 25% winning % can leave on their own terms.
- Most likely losing his best player for selling drugs
- CC and LK are i'm sure all over his butt about the losing, drug issues, academics etc.

Seems like a no brainer all things considered.

Good Riddance! and lets get ourselves a good young assistant who can recruit ohio and PA and build this like the basketball and baseball programs have been built.

How right you are axeme. 03-wink I got the call this morning that things were about to shake down while I was on the road making calls. I could not wait to get home and see the buzz on this board.
As I had stated before, Dean had still not even signed his contract extension as of a few weeks ago. From what he had told me, all looked good, but he was still upset with the schedule issue. Dean reluctantly made the deal to open with Akron at Akron in the 2003 season as long as that deal was reciprocated. When this season's schedule was released, Akron was game 4. Dean refused to sign his extension until this matter was resolved. As it appeares now, I would imagine we will be seeing the Zips on the fourth week of the season. 03-banghead
This matter, coupled with the Cribbs situation, is what must have made him decide to move on.
FIDO can add to this better than I can, for I only played for Dean for three years. Dean is a stand-up guy and I will always respect him for what he has done for me and this program. There is only so much a man can take before he must move on and I can only wish he and Melody the very best. To me, he will always be "Coach."

Now I only hope we can make the best of this situation. As some of you have posted before, Dean is a good guy and, for the most part, has moved this program in the right direction, but maybe a change was needed to get over that hump. Now all we can do is keep our heads up and keep on supporting those Flashes! Never has the meaining of FIDO's name meant more... F-It and Drive On!04-rock
GO FLASHES!!!

Dean came into a tough situation here at Kent and you have to admire the guy for giving it
his best shot; It would have been great to see what he really could have done this
upcoming season if the Cribb's situation would not have transpired. I would have to believe
that the Cribb's bust was the finale straw of the whole that Dean was dealing with here
at Kent more so than any other factor.

Doug Martin could be the next coach....................

The schedule issue is B.S. A coach with 17 wins in five years doesn't have the leverage to throw a tantrum over ANYTHING. Dean wanted out and is using it to blow smoke. Oh, and regarding Ctribbs, he stated that he's "supporting Cribbs like he was his own son." Some dad.

Good riddance, Dean Pees.

I completely agree with you Punt. Not having been out of the program that long his decision still angers me a bit. I think a move like this upsets most of the players. You come to play at a school promising loyalty to the school, and to the head coach. It will be very difficult for some of the seniors and in some cases freshman to understand. I feel for the players, changing head coaches is something I didnt have to do but always dreaded the thought. The players respected Pees and his ways. But at the same time I understand, and I hope the players will too, that they must move on. Change in this case may be good. I still have a great amount of loyalty to Coach Pees. As my head coach he gave me the opportunity to play football, get an education, and become a better person. His core values are things that I have shaped me and will continue to affect me.

Feelings aside, I am happy for Coach Pees. To get an opportunity like this in the NFL is something you cannot pass up. If he feels this is the right move for him, great. Let him move on. And so will we. You have to remember that he passed up a job offer with the Patriots a few years back before they won the first Super Bowl, and he also passed on a job with Saban at LSU when Saban left MSU. He is basically a student of Belichieck, they are very close ... similar values, coaching strategies, attitude, and ran the same basic defensive system at MSU and Kent that the Patriots run. Pees has put everything he promised he would into this program, and I guess he finally decided to move on. I am not going to speculate on what prompted the move other than it is an awesome opportunity. I don't think we will ever know all the reasons for the move, nor do we need to know. I hope they win another championship next year and I hope we move on and up. All I can say is thanks coach. 04-bow 04-bow 04-bow

As far as a new coach I think the best internal hire if it came to that would be Doug Martin. Don't forget that he has only been here a year. He is not old blood. He also came from a successful East Carolina team where he was the OC for many years, he is ready for a head coaching job. He came into the program and revitalized the offense, their attitude, their outlook. Having Cribbs helped but he is a very talented OC. He is extremely intense and his style would be great implemented across the O and the D. We already have basically two new DC's too, so the core of the staff is fairly new. After the season Pees hired these two new coaches for a fresh start, now they have an opportunity to make an impact. Think about it, bringing in a brand new coach and a brand new staff may just start this cycle of rebuilding the program all over again with brand new promises and frustrations. Then again if the best candidate is external hire him, don't limit ourselves to just internal candidates. But why not try to continue to develop and grow on what we have begun. To some we may not have started much but from a player perspective in the past 5 years its a huge difference. I say give Martin a shot at piggybacking on and improving what we have ..... we may be closer than some think.
