I disagree that this is a bad time for this to happen. And I do not blame DP for doing it. It is a chance to go to the NFL and better yet, to the Super Bowl Champs. IMO, he has done all he is capable of doing. He is not the one to take us to the top of the league. He apparently made no inroads to local recruiting and that is an indictment. The good thing is that a new coach is not behind on recruiting. It is over.
I am sure that DP is a good man and I like that. But, the fact of the matter is that if a coach is going to turn a program around, it must be done quickly, not slowly. He lost is chance to make a good first impression, and that made his progress slow and placed a low ceiling on his possible accomplishments. Now there is an opportunity to make progress in the program if we take it.
The problem is that we have a small time AD. I know that some have challenged my thoughts on this and I hope that I am wrong. Let us see what really happens now. Will he hire from within to save $$$. Or, will he make a mark and suprise the sports world. This is LK's chance to prove me wrong and I would love to eat some crow. Anyone want to make a bet?

He already said that there are attractive candidates in house. He will quickly name one of the coordinators as the next head coach.
YAWN... No splash here.

Could not have described the situation better myself, GF68.
The common demoninator on Pees is that everyone says he's a nice guy. So, I wish him well.I'd take the job if I were him. He's in his mid 50's - chances like this are not going to come around more more for him.
The bonus is that Dean Pees is out of Kent State. No more five year plans. No more "not wanting to make anyone feel bad." No more talk about great off seasons and lousy on seasons. No "no more excuses" then whining about injuries, lack of depth, blah, blah, blah about mid season. See ya later, Coach.
The timing is a problem for a big splash. Hard to yank someone this late in the season. But I hear C.C. is all over the football problem, especially as it relates to attendance.
So, we'll see.

I'm gonna throw a name out here but there's probably no chance. How about John Cooper? I think he's perfect to turn around the program, and I heard he wants to coach again. He is a master recruiter, especially in the state of Ohio. I think he would get some serious talent in here quick, get the team turned around, and then when he retires we will have more status to attract young assistants from big time programs. He is pretty old though, maybe a 3-5 year deal.

Absolutely not! John Cooper could not coach at Ohio State, so what makes you think he could coach at Kent? KSU needs someone young and hungry like Glen Mason when he first came to Kent.

Terry Pluto mentions several candidates in his column today. Let's see what happens...

John Cooper couldnt win the big one, but everyone forgets that he won A LOT of games. He was also considered one of the best recruiting coaches in the country. No doubt he could turn around a MAC program.

I don't think that he would consider a MAC job. He can make plenty more working for ESPN or the like and wait for another BCS gig.

Lou Holtz???
I kid, but somebody with strong ties to the program would be cool. If, and that's a big if, somebody from the high school ranks gets taken, I submit these two names:
Chuck Kyle from St. Ignatius
Tom McDaniels fmr McKinley and current Warren Harding coach. Or look at OSU assistants. They seem to be pretty hot coaching commoditites lately.

I will throw Mitch Browning in the ring. He is Offensive Coordinator at U of Minn. under Glen Mason. He is also the recruiter assigned to Ohio. Minn. always seems to recruit some of the better Ohio Players. He was at KSU under Glen Mason. I do not know him personally but some who do says that Mitch believes that KSU is a great job. I am not endorsing him, just throwing him out for consideration.

Am I missing something on this guy? Sounds like a normal candidate?

Here's what I like about him:
1. Actually wants to be at Kent State.
2. NFL coaching experience...up to the Super Bowl.
3. All American at Pitt
4. Several college coaching stints
5. Recruiting connections through Western PA and NE Ohio.
Sounds good to me!

Here's an interesting Record Courier article about the coaching search. The speculation about staying inside for the next coach isn't new, but the belief that Kent is still a MAC contender is. And I agree. Call me crazy, but just have a gut instinct Cribbs is coming back.

The thing that I like hearing about Martin is words like "fire" and "agressive nature" and "teach the game"
Maybe our guy is already in Kent? Particularly if Cribbs comes back. This guy is his tutor and designed the offense.
