Changing representation in this sort of situation is not at all unusual, nashville. At the start of a situation, it's not uncommon to reach for someone who can try to get the charges dropped or make a deal. This typically falls to a local counsel or someone with great connections. Once it gets past the indictment stage and on to trial, there is a need for an experienced defense litigator. it's a whole new ball game. In big firms, the case just gets switched from one partner group to another and the public never notices the change of representation. In small firms or solo practioners, there is a switch to another firm.
Besides, it is not possible for an attorney to "drop" a client once they've been accepted, even it the person can't pay the bills or the attoney finds out the person is guilty, unless the court orders a change. As there is no mention of such an order, this situation sounds like a gentlemen's handoff from one specialty to another. Those happen with some frequency.
If there is anything disappinting here, it's that a deal has not been made so far. Seems like the Portage County prosecutor's office is trying to make a statement with this case. But since this has gotten to the trial phase, don't look for a deal anytime soon. Expect the defense to try to win a few pre trial motions to weaken the prosecutor's case first. I still argue even if it goes all the way to trial the state has to find twelve people in Portage County to convict Josh beyond a "reasonable doubt." I only know what's been published, but unless there is more, I think a good attorney could make a reasonable doubt case based on the reports.

Most important quote of the article, IMO:
Quote:Kent State University quarterback Joshua Cribbs pleaded not guilty to charges of trafficking in marijuana Monday morning during his arraignment in Portage County Common Pleas Court in Ravenna.
I'm not worried about the kangaroo student conduct court. The screw up makes it a "do over" anyway.
Now we have the toughest part -being patient until June.

You are underestimating the student conduct court. They suspend and dismiss students for less. If he is found guilty there then I don't think he will even be in school to play football for atleast a year.

I know the authority provided the student conduct court. My reference to a "kanagroo court" is botching up the record ( i.e. the video tape) so it can't be taken forward on appeal. In a system that's supposed to have due process, this should mean a do over. Might be the same outcome, but it's a do over.
