Interesting article in the Charleston newspaper today concerning the direction of the C of C's basketball facility. Seems some C of C supporters want to simply renovate the existing gym while some favor building a new, larger arena. Either way, it would be a big improvement over their current high school like gym. The article also mentions attendance problems at other SoCon schools with large arenas. Here's the article:

I saw that on the ESPN board. Hopefully, our numbers will go up steadily now that Houston's ship has stopped taking on water!

03-puke Charleston press is OBVIOUSLY trying to protect the the amount of usage CofC and the SoCon lend to the municipal facility by throwing all this garbage stats in.
It makes no consideration of whether the teams are experiencing winning seasons or not.
ASU used to rock with 6-8K at big games when they were winning and playing regional rivals like Davidson in ol Varsity.
WCU gets back on track they'll easily fill RamShackle.
Chatt used to pack em in their large facility--and will again if "Dean Smith" Lebo gets the program back on its wheels.
There ain't enough tractor pulls, wrasslin' matches, needlepoint shows and Bill Monroe concerts to fully utilize the North Chuckytown Colliseum without CofC and Cit playing a few games there.

Hey LowCountry App..if App continues winning this year, the mention of ASU's 2400 attendance will be a joke---we'll be back at the 4500 range again.
Plus he didn't mention the SRO the other year when the Heels came to town. And if Lebo stays and gets the Noogies rockin'--they'll absolutely pack em in.
Journalsitic drivel. :snore: :snore:

Phoenix,

John Kresse has twin sons playing b-ball at a private high school they attend in Charleston. The new coach at C of C is Tom Herrion. He was an assistant coach at Virginia prior to taking the Cougar job. While they have stumbled recently, they did win the Great Alaska Shootout and had some quality wins over Wyoming, Oklahoma State and Villanova.

One graphic you didn't see in the on-line article but appeared in the newspaper article was attendance throughout the league for 2001-02. Here are the numbers they gave:

App St. 2,452

C of C 3,307

UTC 3,186

Citadel 2,059

Davidson 2,409

ETSU 2,704

Furman 1,385

Ga. Southern 1,610

UNCG 1,264

VMI 2,095

WCU 1,940

Wofford 1,834

SoCon,

I hope you're right. With a winning team and a nice barn there is no reason why attendance can't be 5,000+. When I was at App during the Cantwin era (or is that error) the students rarely showed up. Of course the team did suck. I believe we even lost to Milligan during that time. Has this improved? Does the student body show up to support the team these days or do we still have those morons who show up at the games wearing Tar Heel sweatshirts? Boy, that use to piss me off

The students are pretty good this year. I would say there is about 500-1000 that stand courtside at every game, regardless of opponent. Another 1500 or so that have come to a couple games. For the first time since I've been following Appalachian, the greek community has really shown good support to the team.

The best student support that I've seen for ASU was probably during the end of the buzz era. We had the Mountaineer Maniacs packing out the lower level to every home game, providing a creative and intense home court advantage. We've yet to see it at the Holmes Center, but its coming.

IMO, 5000 on a consistant basis would be pretty tough. There isn't very much support from the local community or alumni (ASU isn't exactly a convenient place to see a mid-week game), you would have to get roughly a third of the enrollment to attend every game. I just don't see a group of hippies spinning and dancing over from East Hall to see App square off against Mars Hill. You also don't get those students who only go the football games to drink. 04-drinky

True KMApps. We need to find a way to have a couple easy games in December without killing the appeal of home games. there were about 4 games that surprised me that ANYONE would actually walk across the street to see.
A good team and attractive home opponents we should be able to average 4500 fans easily. We've averaged 3500 legit before. :)

Looks like they opted for a compromise on arena size:
