Here is a clue: Nobody cares about 1AA Football.

Why do you think all these teams have moved up in recent years.
And more are planning to do so. Except those of you who waited are screwed,

Because the NCAA made a rule that you have to be accepted in a conference first.
Not many openings.

Yeah, I think this shows what is wrong with D1aa. I commend NCAAbbs for keeping these sites up and running, but really nobody seems to care enough to post. More inportantly nobody seems to care enough about D1aa football to go to the games. Aside from the few UDel/Yale/Montana types, very few D1aa schools can atteact more than a few thousand fans to their games. Playing football on this level is the biggest money looser in the NCAA. That is why so many teams were trying to move up. The NCAA had to slap on that moratorium, just to keep the whole division from collapsing. It has done the same now with the conference affilitaion rule. Even with this restriction you are still likely to see a dozen more schools try to move up in the next five years. It is a shame, because there is a lot of good football being played at this level.

Montana's study showed them that moving up would be too costly.

One of the preseason football magazines (I think it is Sports Illustrated), has an article on FCS schools who are considering moving up (Appalachian St., Georgia Southern, Villanova). A cost study was made of previous FCS schools that had moved up and most lost more money after they moved up then they did on the FCS level. Cost includes scholarships, coaches salaries, facilities etc. Few reach the top 25 level and winning on the FBS level is difficult. Western Kentucky was given as an example of a school winning on the FCS level but losing on the FBS level in the Sun Belt Conference.

Georgia Southern completed their study but has not revealed their decision. Appalachian St is still in the process, while Villanova supposedly completed their study but has not solved their stadium issue. Then there is the factor that they have to have an invite to an existing FBS conference (which Montana had). They can't come in as independents. South Alabama gets its shot in 2013 when it joins the Sun Belt Conference.
