RE: Dixie State name change. So close, yet so far away.

I remember a few years back a person who move to Las Cruces took issue with the image of three crosses being placed on the city police cars; claiming a separation of church and state. Of course the argument was ridiculous since the city's name translates to "The Crosses".
I think any word, symbol, term that is rooted in oppression, i.e. The Holocaust, Slavery, the Trail of Tears, etc. is going to have a group of people trying to cancel it out of everyday society and culture. Jeremiah Dixon was only performing a duty but a variation on his name was perverted and glorified by the South in song during the Civil War. Much like the Hindu symbol "the Swatika" was perverted by Hitler. As I've said, if you want to have an all inclusive society, we need to be able to look at the world through other people's eyes; or at least have an an understand of how they might feel. There is no good reason why the word "Dixie" shouldn't be retired by the school. In the end, it's just a name change.
Just put it into similar context to Seattle U changing the name of the Connolly Center to Redhawk Center; because it was found that Archbishop Thomas Connolly was involved in covering up sex crimes committed by a Priest, Father Michael Cody. Archbishop Thomas Connolly died in 1991, the name change didn't happen until 2018.
Who knows, the name "Las Cruces" may be next. How can a city's name have connotations to one religion over another? When we try not to offend anyone, we will offend everyone. It is better to learn from history, embrace our mistakes and grow from them. Trying to revise history and hide everything through cancel culture only weakens everyone.
