If Boise took the time to make a public statement conflicting with what the MWC publicly said, which they did, than to me that means it is "something".

It's something because Boise State thought about it and decided they needed to tell Thompson, "Hey, commish, read the signed agreement, we're going to hold you to it." I'd guess that someone (lawyers) told them that they shouldn't let Thompson's statement go without publicly stating that he's wrong and that the contract still applies.
