Hawai'i is 5 hours behind the east coast during "standard" time and 6 hours behind during "daylight" time, and they typically start home football games at 6 pm Hawai'i time. ESPN isn't going to pay significant money for those games unless ESPN gets control over the start times. ESPN needs inventory for the 10/10:30pm ET time slot. That's 4/4:30pm Hawaii time. That's a great time for a local kickoff.

This year, Hawaii had 4 home games kickoff at 10:30pm or 11pm ET (or 4:30pm/5pm local).

An occasional 1pm local kickoff would mean a broadcast for the East Coast prime time. I doubt Hawaii would object to the money or the exposure.

And, I note that over the next 6 seasons, Hawaii hosts:
UCLA, Oregon, Arizona, Vanderbilt, Boise State (x2), and BYU...
