He also mentioned, in a related topic, the fact that there is a $1 million exit fee for any schools that decide to leave... UMKC would pay that fee if they joined and then left. UMKC in the past has indicated interest in the MVC, but the MVC has not shown the same interest back ...If PFW left, the Summit would drop down to five baseball and 5 men's soccer schools.

What caught my attention was Douple talking about how the Summit League needs a soccer school. Most people have focused on SL's need for a baseball school, assuming that FW will leave at the first chance. But FW also takes away a soccer team. Some have speculated that the SL was demanding that UMKC starts a baseball team in order to get an invite. But UMKC would bring a soccer team and so that has value in itself. I remember reading that being in the WAC adds over $200,000 a year to UMKC's travel budget. So in theory being in the SL for 4-5 years is a break even in regard to a $1 million exit fee, more than 5 years and they are ahead.

If UMKC wants to be in the Missouri Valley, good for them, I hope it works out (I am listening to the MVC tournament right now-- Go Drake !!). But it is not likely that a team that has been to 1 post-season tourney in 32 years of D1 basketball (the CBI in 2017) & that draws 1000 to their games at Swinney is very attractive to the MVC right now. But with their new AD...and maybe a new coach...and a chancellor who seems to realize the value that a good basketball team can bring to the school...maybe in a few years...??

They didn't need to hire Dr. Brandon Martin to get into the Summit league. Any AD could accomplish that. Getting into the MVC, that will take a lot of work. Martin said that his goal is to get UMKC in the top 100 in athletics and in basketball. If he can accomplish that goal in the Kansas City market, now UMKC becomes attractive. He is also going to need to increase fundraising. He did save $150,000 per year by moving back to Swinney.

The WAC has no exit fee. Paying a $1 million exit fee to the Summit when that money might be needed to join the MVC would be a mistake. The Summit is a lateral transfer at best. Their top ranked basketball team by NET ranking is South Dakota at #100. Their second best is Omaha at #168. Those are the only two in the top 200.

The WAC has NMSU at #46, GCU at #90, UVU at #92, CBU at #165, UTRGV at #174 and Seattle at #188. The WAC has better markets. The Summit is a Dakota league and not as attractive for recruiting.

On Douple talking about the need for a soccer team, my guess is that there may be a concern about Eastern Illinois. EIU is cutting athletic scholarships and maybe he feels it is just a matter of time before they drop men's soccer.
