It is a 30 minute flight...not exactly that taxing.

You still have to pay for a plane, and you have to transport your equipment too, which gets very expensive to fly, even over a short distance.

I also think it would be used against them recruiting wise, even as a short flight it's an inconvenience.

I think two factors hurt the Maui option.

The first is that the large majority of UH fans are on Oahu, which has a population of nearly a million compared to Maui's 170K. A lot of fans might fly over to Maui for a game or two but to achieve anything close to FBS minimum attendance over multiple seasons the games have to be played where the fans are.

The second is that the stadium on Maui is county-owned and multiple legal agreements would have to be negotiated and signed for UH to put in needed improvements and play games on a long-term basis. Reaching agreements on cost sharing and revenue sharing could slow or tank the process. None of that is an issue on the UH campus where the facilities are under the university's complete control.
