2 D2 schools are in trouble.

Alliance University (formerly Nyack) has lost its accreditation. It has had financial problems for many years, and recently sold their campus north of NYC, moved into rented office space in the city, and are trying to play D2 sports in rented and shared facilities. Alliance can appeal the decision, but loss of accreditation is rarely reversed. Alliance plays in the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference.

The other is Alderson Broaddus University. The West Virginia Higher Education Policy Commission this month granted reauthorization for every private college in the state to continue to operate and award degrees, except for one: Alderson Broaddus University. The Commission is waiting and seeking more information before reauthorizing AB. AB is down to 500 undergraduate students and a majority are athletes. Not only to do they have D2 football, they also operate a second program with Sprint Football. They have men’s volleyball, women’s wrestling, acrobatics and tumbling, and nearly every other sport you can think of. AB competes in the Mountain East Conference.

I’m not sure what info the state commission seeks, but I’m sure it’s financial related, along the lines of consumer protection—making sure the school isn’t going to be forced to shut down unexpectedly and leave students in the lurch.
