RE: 2018 CAA Women's Basketball Tournament
The results of today were kind of what we expected, but I think we saw the complete opposite of how each game actually went.
I knew that Delaware would not be an easy game. For Drexel it comes down to strong defense, playing within themselves, holding onto the basketball, and making shots when they have the opportunities. Drexel did not make their shots today and had to grind it out. Credit to Delaware as they really stepped up their defense for these two games and really made it tough for Drexel.
But Drexel's had their backs against the wall so many times this year. They were down late against Niagara, W&M, JMU, Elon, and now Delaware, and came out with improbable wins in all of these games.
Really hoping that Sara Woods is OK. I haven't heard anything yet. Drexel does have a lot of depth and like the Eagles, have a "next 'women' up mentality", but her experience is needed. Not having her on the court could be difference maker.
I was thinking about how awful it would have been to see Delaware playing in the championship game on our home court after they just beat us. It would have been the equivalent of what happened to the Vikings, having to watch the Eagles play in the Super Bowl on their field after the Eagles beat them in the semi-finals.
Even though Elon is going to be a really tough opponent for Drexel tomorrow, I really enjoyed the 2nd game tonight and watching JMU take that beatdown. I was sitting right across the aisle from the JMU fans and really took enjoyment in their expressions. I even kicked a JMU fan out of my reserved seat when I got to the game late. Keeping with the theme of NFL analogies, JMU has become the Patriots of CAA WB. You could tell by reading their posts that 5 championships in 8 years isn't enough, and they made the trip to Philly almost expecting a championship. The pictures and the expressions on the faces of the JMU fans behind their bench were priceless. If any JMU fans are offended by my post here, just accept that it comes with the territory of rooting for a dynasty. If any of my teams are ever have this much success, I'd expect nothing less from my opponent's fans as well.
Finally, I'm excited about tomorrow, and I got the championship matchup I was hoping for. I think that the DAC will be close to sold out, and it will be an electric atmosphere. Drexel's going to have a really tough game, and I'm actually not expecting a victory. But this team is relentless and you can't count them out.
Both Drexel and Elon deserve to be in the NCAA Tournament. They are better than many of these middle range power 5 teams that will get in. I know that Dan has brought out all of the stats explaining why that won't happen, and he's probably right. But I still say that the system is rigged against mid majors and the NCAA selections are a farce.
