There are legit reasons a player might choose a G5 school over a P5.

1. It depends on what position the coaches want to recruit the player to play. We've poached players we probably wouldn't otherwise get by promising a shot at QB (remember Tavaris Cadet? Could you have gotten him without offering him a chance to play QB?)

2. More play time and a chance to get more experience for the draft. You can genuinely have a decent chance at the NFL and get limited play time if you're at a major program (this is especially true for running backs and quarterbacks).

3. The player may have a bonafide offer but to grayshirt or at a PWO with no guarantee of a scholarship in the future. More major schools are offering gray shirts these days.

4. In this age of FCOA a player might get more money at a G5 than another (GS for one is near the top of the FBS in FCOA and offers the maximum aid allowed by the NCAA).

No one here is saying a player would choose Southern or State over a major SEC program if all other considerations are equal. The thing is, all the other considerations are not always equal.
