They do pretty well in both of those sports in D-II. We'll have to see how well their coaches recruit for D-I when they get there.

UCSD strikes me as a school that really has their act together. I predict that within five years their athletic program will be one of the top two or three in the Big West. I also expect a UCSD-Hawaii rivalry to emerge and I think it’s gonna be fun.

If UCSD has their act together, they can make some headway in landing quality talent. But it's not just the other BW members who should be concerned about further dilution of in-state talent for recruits. Those concerns will also apply to Fresno State, SJSU and especially San Diego State (the last case mainly for olympic sports). The Aztecs athletic director will never publicly say it, but I suspect the last thing he wants is to have another Division 1 institution in his backyard. Especially one who will be able to compete at a high level.


Nonetheless, it's still a sad drop from the acme of a generation ago. In 1990, the Big West and UNLV celebrated a national championship in basketball. In 2020, it will be celebrating some Roadrunners and potentially the start of a UCSD-Hawaii rivalry.

At least USD hasn't tried making the jump to FBS and UCSD won't field a football team ever again.

For everything else, I don't think UCSD will have issues landing talent. Basketball and Baseball have been doing very well, so it'll be exciting if the Tritons can continue attract talented players at this level.
