Granted there were internal issues. BUt he saw the writing on the wall when the permanent position interviews were going on.

The internal battle is similar to that at many schools, but is exploited that the state level, and has been since the Gail Fullerton years to squash any hints of "Taco Tech" advancing (yes, the opponents of a Silicon Valley oriented university dubbed the project that name (goes back to pressure to get Davidson to retire as chair of Engineering early). We in favor of it of course took the derogatory name to heart and are happy to have that.

But you are mistaken to think there are not forces at the State level in the CSU and UC boards that drive the show, and keep the CSUs starved and without innovation.
