It's the sad affair of college athletics (particularly in Texas):
Say the following is true:
stAte is at 11-0
Texas State is 11-0
SMU/UH/Rice/UTSA is 5-6
if stAte came to San Marcos for the last game, it wouldn't be as well attended as if a Texas team with a losing record came in for the last game.
Even if the mythological stAte/Texas State game was for the conference championship.
Us Texans are a bit of a different breed. Bragging rights over your buddy's school takes precedence over conference championships.
I remember North Texas fans complaining about that. At some point, the reasoning actually became that North Texas was so bad in the Sun Belt because they were playing Sun Belt Teams and didn't care. If they moved to a league with more Texas teams, they would instantly become more competitive.
The funny thing is, that actually happened. For some illogical reason, they started playing better against the lower quality in state competition, and I'm pretty sure the larger crowds had something to do with it.
Of course coming from a state where instate matchups are unheard of outside of the D2 level, you guys are always going to sound strange.
I still don't get how they haven't sold out their nice new stadium with all the in state teams they now play.
You can take the team out of the Belt . . .
. . . But you can't take the Belt out of the team . . . .
It's still north texas . . . .
