What schools in the Sunbelt offer PHD's? Not too many I would guess. I know App doesn't. We also have a population of 32k. 1/4 that of Hburg region.

This is actually the biggest impact of the schools leaving to the CUSA.

UNT has a large doctoral program that is graduating around 200 a year (Benefit of a large enrollment and one of the requirements for the Teir 1 quest in Texas). FIU, FAU, WKU, and Middle all have doc programs as well that are fairly varied.

Where things get real dicey is not who offers PhD's, but who offers ones outside of the education department and some of the behavior sciences. The schools that offer PhD's in Engineering, the hard sciences, Business and Pharm/Med/PT are viewed on a different tier in academia. It is just how it is.

As I get closer closer to finishing my doctorate I am become more and more cognizant of who does and does not offer Phds. I have been this same discussion with a friend of mine about deciding between 3 offers and their is a legitimate bias between the "research" schools and those that only have a limited offering of PhD programs.

I don't like it that the sunbelt took a major hit in the places I could potentially go work at when I finish. I have always loved the south and was happy about potentially staying in the Belt if need be. Now, I have much more limited choices in the Belt in my field and I can see why some faculty would be snobbish via this problem

Georgia State has 49 or so PhD programs, plus the JD. It's a bit of an outlier in that regard in the SBC.
