The motives differ.

Clemson plays NC State and Wake Forest in the ACC Atlantic Divion each season. Duke and UNC in the Coastal appear on Clemson's fb schedule as rotation dictates. GT is Clemson's permanent cross-division rival. There isn't a need to add an ooc FCS school from NC to Clemson's schedule. The game with SC is yearly. There is another short series that has been scheduled with nearby Georgia.

South Carolina doesn't have any yearly game with one particular NC school. When Spurrier was coach, the decision was to play at least one school from NC yearly. Recruiting, media coverage in NC, interest, proximity, and lower travel costs, are the motivations to do so.. SC hasn't played Wake since leaving the ACC, and a game with Duke hasn't been played in many years. Games with UNC, NCSU, ECU, and Appalachian State are scheduled by mini-series or as a single game agreement to play in Charlotte.

Since SC left the ACC, playing ECU has been fairly frequent, but not yearly. ECU has been a good opponent for USC through the years. ECU's nice upgrades in facilities certainly makes them more attractive as a host.

One can understand ECU's desire to schedule a substantive amount of power schools from the greater mid-Atlantic area. The AAC being so spread-out, makes choice regional games even more important.

Clemson usually plays their FCS game against another SC school, so I agree that they wouldn't have a need to schedule any of the NC FCS schools. From an FBS standpoint, you're right they they play enough conference games in NC to have to play ECU OOC.

I do, however, wish that we could renew the series with SC to continue after our 2021 game. Would also like to get Kentucky or Georgia on the schedule, since they are two of the SEC states that we don't travel to in conference.

ECU has been a pretty frequent opponent for us over the years. I'd be willing to bet some decent money another contract gets signed at some point. I know the school has been trying to find a second annual P5 out of conference game, but that still leaves room for one game each year with a G5 school.

Just looking at some future schedules, if I was a betting man I'd think we'd try to pick it up again in 2026 or 2028
