Another look at Jax State
I am aware that they have been dismissed in other threads as a possible FCS to SBC candidate. This article has me thinking a little about the potential of Jax State:

Quote:“We are committed to facility upgrades for all our teams and all our sports,” said trustee Jim Folsom, chairman of the board’s athletics committee. “I think we have a four- or five-year plan to do everything.

“There was some concern when we started with football we would never get to our other sports. We are … going to deliver on those.”

The enhancements are being done for a number of reasons. The Gamecocks’ facilities, among the best in the country when they played at the Division II level, are now antiquated by current standards. Koegel hopes one day to attract an NCAA regional hosting opportunity. And, of course, there’s the attraction to any would-be FBS conference invitation.

The Sun Belt Conference recently brought Georgia State into its fold. JSU football coach Jack Crowe said after Friday’s J-Day game that decision would be good for the Gamecocks’ desire to move up, but university policymakers and administrators at Monday’s board meeting weren’t so committal.

“We’ve made them aware of (JSU’s) long-term plan to move up,” university president Bill Meehan said. “We would make a good partner within that footprint for the FBS sometime in the future for the Sun Belt. At this point, we’re making our progress. You saw today how we’re getting our facilities up.

“I want to make sure that we make ourselves attractive for an invitation from a conference we want to be in. I don’t want to be begging on my knees like the ugly stepsister trying to get into the prom. I want to be sure that they come to us and say we’d love to have you because your facilities and your athletic reputation are what we want to have for the Sun Belt; that’s what we’re moving toward. I want to make sure we have the prettiest prom dress we can.”

What I find confusing is when I see some posters here (fans of SBC schools) who are giving Ga Southern real credibility, when Jacksonville State seems like just as much of a longshot, but with the advantages that they are better located within the footprint and are convenient to Birmingham. App State get some de facto consideration, because they have stated intentions (and I guess because they beat Michigan some years ago...)

It just seems like if we are talking about longshot FCS schools in a small market that need facilities upgrades, why not at least go with the better geographical fit?

I have to wonder if the only difference is that there are GaSo and App posters making lots of noise on this forum...

Go away.

(edit)

Before you start freaking out and crying...

I said go away for two reasons.

1. It's Jax State.

2. It's Jax State...

I can think of two reasons that Jax State will not join the SBC...

USA and Troy

Yeah, not gonna happen. Plus, does AL need 6 FBS schools?

But I get AJG's bias. That Jax State trip last year was awesome. Great fans over there.

I disagree with the first point, agree with the second.

While the Michigan win is the reason that any casual fan has heard of us, I really do not think it factors into our merit as an expansion candidate whatsoever. We are in a small market but our appeal to any conference would be what we've done on the field and in the stands. The past 5 seasons, we've averaged 10 wins and 25,061 in football attendance. That would be our primary selling point.

However, I completely agree that the App/GA Southern fans talking on the boards is likely a big reason that we may appear to be a more serious candidate than we are. I think we will be FBS but it will not be this year. At this point, there may not be much interest on either side. We have to wait and see where all these conferences will shift geographically so we do not put ourselves in a position to be doing more traveling than we can afford. From the conference's standpoint, they want to get their TV markets first. After they have those locked up, then they may consider some small market teams to add stability. I just don't see that happening until at least a year or two down the road and it would not be until then that Jax State, GA Southern or App would really enter the picture.

Good points. Unlike some of my brethren, I do think that a small market team with a decent fan base could be an expansion candidate for the purpose of adding talent and stability.

If Jax State would be dismissed based on Alabama University System politics, I get it.

Does Alabama need 6 FBS teams? I dunno, depends on your definition of the word "need." Do I need a Kate Upton shaped blow up doll? Probably not in the strictest sense...

Well, it isn't like there is any other sports anyone cares about in this state. That and we have no pro teams in any sport.

Not saying that it should have six FBS teams but it could certainly handle it.

If we were going to add a small market team Georgia Southern and App State would be on the list before Jax St. All that add would do is make Troy and USA worse and give us no no market.

At least Georgia southern is a good team. Heck, I would rather see us add West Florida before they get a football team.

Jax State has zero chance of getting in to the Sun Belt, and because of that fact they have zero chance of moving up to FBS. they just need to chill and accept the fact they will always be an FCS program. I wish them well and all the luck in the world at the 1-AA level, but that is the end of my good will toward the Gamecocks.

I think UWF would be a great add to the SunBelt one day.
But, last I heard, the Argonauts may be up to 3 years away from even D2 football.

But man that would be a fun little triangle right on the Gulf Coast of Troy, USA, and UWF.

That will be at least four years away. UWF definately would be great, however, they need to get their enrollment up 15,000. With FSU and UF increasing tuition, UWF might get their a little earlier.

RE: Another look at Jax State
They're within the footprint. They're improving their facilities. They don't have a great market to sell. I see no reason not to consider them though. They'd be below Georgia Southern, Charlotte, Appalachian State, any Texas or Louisiana WAC left overs, but I'd place them above Liberty. I wouldn't dismiss them as a matter of course though. The enrollment for JSU is on the smallish size (I only count on campus figures by the way) as another downside but it is larger than at least one Belt school. I'd place JSU above Murray State, equal to Lamar, and below Missouri State if thinking about programs which are not the most obvious choices. I'd also place them above Kennesaw State as of now.

West Florida isn't even Division 1 for any sport and isn't a realistic possibility. They neither have football nor a place to play. They have zero history of support for any sport. West Florida is little different than Auburn-Montgomery (NAIA) or Alabama-Huntsville (D2).
