Cancel a tiny tournament with few fans. Go to a large event with many fans. Cancel going to both based on principle. Either that or go to both.

The Ivy League doesn't participate in the NCAA tournament. Its member schools do separately from the conference structure. The Ivy League functionally cancelled the rest of their basketball season, but whether or not to play additional non-conference games (be it NCAA/NIT/etc) is up to the individual schools.

You're basically suggesting that the Ivy League obtain an emergency court order barring Yale from playing any organized basketball, which they couldn't get even if they wanted one (and they don't, they're going to leave it up to the universities).

They didn't need a court order. They could have just said we highly recommend Yale not participate, and twist a few arms on the side, and guess what, Yale would not be participating. But they did not.

The fact remains, they canceled a tiny tournament with few fans, while essentially saying Yale is good to go on going to much bigger tournament, with a much higher chance of viral transmission.

Double standard. Either stand on principle, or don't.

as others have stated, it's a conference vs school decision. But, how does the decision impact you? Why do you care? In your own words, "they canceled a tiny tournament with few fans".

I would just like people who state they are doing something on principle, to actually do so all the way, rather than in a half hearted, wishy washy way. If they say they are concerned about safety, then be concerned about safety. The fact remains, there is a higher chance of catching this virus at an NCAA tournament than their little tournament. So, stand up and say they won't participate in the NCAA's. But they won't do that. Either be all in or be all out. Don't just do things halfway for eye candy.

The conference cancelled all sports for the rest of the academic year. I'm not sure how much more "all in" they can be.
