I'm not so sure about that. There is the one photo of him as a child. But the O'Rourkes, to paraphrase the Fred Thompson character in "Red October," don't take a dump without a plan, in particular a political plan. Politics is their family business and dominates their lives. I can see them saying, "Hey, one day he may want to run for office in El Paso, and it would help if he could seem Hispanic, so let's do this." I think the long-term plan was for him to seem Hispanic. I do find it interesting that "Beto" seems to be more prevalent in Portuguese than in Spanish. So let's not just give him a Hispanic nickname, let's give him one that's a little bit distinctive, too.

Tanqtonic went to HS with him, and says he was known as "Bobby" in HS.

If that turns out to be true, Beto will be done. If he went from Bobby to Beto late in life, it can only be to manipulate the masses. If he is shown to have been "beto" early in life then he'll get a pass.

Interesting that Ted Cruz is actually Hispanic ( father from Cuba ? ) but uses an americanized nic name.
