I know that BU beating Northeastern scared some people, but from what I saw, they were not a good team at all. But Drexel usually plays well at the DAC and in general, teams in CBB play much worse on the road, and Drexel may have just beaten up on a group of weary travelers.
Now that we're 5 games into the season, a couple of observations....
1. This is a much more disciplined team. Even though they play up tempo, they seem to play much more controlled and don't turn the ball over as much. That's probably due to a change in personnel. Now that Maine is gone, and Lee isn't playing as much, that makes a difference.
2. They don't miss Tramaine Isabell. Maine may have been the most talented player not named Rose, Anderson, or Damion Lee to ever play at Drexel. However, it seemed like last year's team played a bunch of undisciplined street ball with a bunch of talented guards fighting with each other for points. I don't seem to be seeing that anymore.
3. Cam Wynter might be one of the big surprises in the CAA this year. He was ROW last week, and has a good chance to win it again this week.
4. Free Throw shooting is excellent so far. We know that Harper is a good shooter. But Cam is showing that he's might be a very good FT shooter. And you've got guys like John and Butler who are more experienced, disciplined player who also appear to be good from the line. FT shooting can make up for lack of talent, and Drexel might be able to win some games from the line this year, kind of like they did against La Salle.
5. I know it's early, but from what I've seen so far, this team might have been extremely underestimated. Preseason predictions were based on points lost from the previous year, but the new group appears to be more talented than expected.
Interesting that BU played Rutgers close today it was a 3 point game at the last media timeout. Rutgers stretched it out a little more at the end shooting a bunch of free throws. It is hard to know what kind of team they are, other than inconsistent.
I agree we look more disciplined this year. I think it will stay that way with Lee's return. It is ironic that out of all the guards, it is probably the senior Harper that needs to tighten it up a bit.
If Wynter keeps going like he has been, no one will think about Isabell anymore.
I don't think I would refer to Butler as experienced. He played 25 minutes in four games that look like mostly blowouts at Navy before departing mid-year. He really is the same as Perry; he just practiced with Navy for a few months where Perry went to prep school, then both red-shirted last year. To me Butler is one of the big revelations especially for someone who really hasn't played competitively since high school back when Bruiser was still at the helm of Drexel.
