Was Zach Spiker hiring a panic move?
Here's a thought of mine, that it's very possible that Drexel may have rushed into things by hiring Zach Spiker.
Now this is not to say that Spiker is not a very good choice. But here's a possibility of how things could have played out.
The AD held their extensive search, and interviewed plenty of candidates...guys like Jim Rullo came through the door, and so did Arnold, Mason, etc. There were so national choices too. Spiker interviewed, and I'm sure many others did as well. Ingelsby was high on their list, but he couldn't interview because Notre Dame is still playing.'
Meanwhile, our enemies to the south are having lots of problems down there. The school has no permanent AD in place. Holden announced he transferring. Rumors are flying around that Corbett, Carter, and Johnson are also gone. Delaware as decided that they are not rushing into hiring a coach until they hire an AD. It looks like the new coach of Delaware will have to go through a rebuild similar to what Pat Skerry went through at Towson. The majority of their fan base might die of old age or natural causes before the Hens will have a chance to sniff double digit wins.
In order to avoid a similar disaster at Drexel, they realized that they could not wait for Ingelsby especially if ND goes to the Final Four. Rumors may have been swirling that many Drexel players were contemplating transferring as well. In order to put a stop to this, Zillmer had to pull the trigger fast. They liked what they saw of Spiker and were willing to pay his $140k buyout in order to save the program, so he could get in the door right away and help keep the current roster in tact.
This is total speculation, and I could be totally wrong about this, but this is my gut feeling as to what has happened.
