RE: North Charleston CAAT
The problem JB is those fans of the other schools were present for all sessions, not just their own games. Sure you get the influx of fans that are only interested in their game, but the VA3 absolutely supported the entire event, not just their own games. While I agree that Charleston will be a disaster, I dont think it will be because of the lack of day trips available. You need butts in the seats and Charleston (drawing 3000 per game) and UNCW (drawing 4000 per game) are your 2 biggest draws right now. They want the tournament to be an event and people to stay all weekend. They wanted that in Richmond and Baltimore as well. I bet more people are willing to go to Charleston for a weekend win or lose than Baltimore or Richmond. I predict they will do just fine on attendance, which really means they will do just as good there as anywhere else. Fact is only North Charleston and Richmond bid on the tournament, so it is not like the options were rampant. Logistically I think Richmond makes the most sense, despite it being an awful place to play. Baltimore flopped. Charleston will do a bit better than Baltimore. Charleston cares a bit more about basketball than does Baltimore, even if not fans of the CAA or Charleston in particular. The problem is the conference has done nothing to build the brand of the CAA which is why very few places make sense for the tournament. To draw crowds there has to be appeal and a brand. We dont have that. Richmond was the closest to having that even after the VA3 left.
