They won the SEC West, ranked 6th in the Nation and a decent RPI. There RPI was higher than UL's most of the season. They definitely should have been higher than seeded 11th.
I attended both Universities, so I say that with no bias. When I saw the brackets come out and UL and Ole Miss would have to play each other, if both teams survived their regionals, was screwed up for both teyams after following both teams all season.
I don't see how any of the teams couldy have been happy with that draw. That should have been a game for the CWS.
Thanks Cajuns for a fun year. It was the most fun since 1999 and 2000.
Ole Miss was not the 11th overall seed. Baseball does not seed teams other than #1-8 national seeds. The rest of the teams are paired by regions.
I truly believe that had Florida beaten LSU to win the SEC tournament, Ole Miss would have been the #8 national seed. LSU ended up with a better overall SEC record than Ole Miss (because of the additional games in the SEC tournament) and won 2 of 3 against Ole Miss. Pretty easy to give the nod to LSU over Ole Miss with the identical resumes.
I know they don't technically seed past 8th but they would match the 6th national
Seed with a regional lower than 8 and I think the #1 national seed would get the weaker (16th) regional
I said 11th because it would only make sense if the 6th National seed would be match up against an 11th Regional.
Now since they have brackets they don't have to put what the unseeded Regionals are, but you should be able figure it out.
By beating the 6th seeded Cajuns, they took the Cajuns spot at #6 and play 3rd seed ed Virginia in the CWS
Just like in 2000, the Cajuns were the 1 seed in the CWS series playing 8th seeded Stanford after beating 1st seeded South Carolina in the Supers.
Good luck to one of my Alma Matta's, Ole Miss in the CWS.
Now on to an awesome football season! Looking forward to playing the newcomers to the Belt
ESPN pays literally zero attention to seeding during matchups. The #1 National Seed is not guaranteed the easiest Regional, (Oregon State got a crappy Regional Draw this year because they were one of only two west hosts) and is far from guaranteed to be matching up with the lowest seeded regional host in Supers.
Its all done geographically. Had LSU lost to Florida, Ole Miss is probably the 8 National Seed, and the Tigers travel to Lafayette for Supers. You are correct in that you take over the seed of the Highest seeded team the farther you advnce, and CWS Matchups are paired so if all 8 National Seeds advanced (Has never happened) That 1 v 8 2 v 7 3 v 6 and 4 v 5 matchups would take place. However, that is all that is guaranteed.
It's sad that being the #1 National seed has no advantage to being the 8th National seed until the CWS. I realize they try to keep in driving distance for most schools, that's why every Louisiana school usually gets sent to LSU.
It makes it nice to be able to go to the games, just not at Alex Box. It was nice to see Houston beat them there this year. It's usually the Cajuns losing in the finals.
I just remember in 2000 that they were sayjng that the Lafayette Regional was the 16th Rated Regional, that's why when we won we went to #1 South Carolina. I don't think they had brackets like today
Many people assume the regional sent to the 1 seed for Supers is the 16th seeded regionals. That's not the case. I really think Cal Poly was the worst Regional Host this year...but they were not sent to Oregon State despite the fact it would make sense. Heck, UC Irvine was horribly seeded and sent to Corvallis, no 1 seed deserves having to play them three times that early in the tourney. That's a Super Regional opponent, not a regional.
Though I will admit, geographic and travel concerns were not as big a deal in the early years of this format.
