That would never fly. No way the P5 expand the playoffs without getting AQ for their conference champs.

LOL. The sub-committee for the CFP just proposed it today. It is said that it will pass easily. News flash. No conference is an automatic qualifier now. Ask the Pac 12 and Big 12 about that. The automatic part concerns guaranteeing the money, not the playoff spots.
If a P5 can't get its conference champ in with 6 chances, plus an additional 6 at large spots, then nobody wants that dang team, anyway. They deserve to be out.
The SEC is making the big push for this, along with likely the Big 10 and of course the AAC. The SEC envisions getting 6 or 7 teams in some years, lol. I'm sure the Big 10 feels they can get extras, too.

If passed, this will be a shot in the arm college football needs to get back to some sense of parity.

Evidently the boost in value for the CCGs from being de facto qualifiers is good enough, and not worth upsetting the solid defense against charges of procedural unfairness which might interfere with getting the allowance for up to two extra FBS games for the CFP participants from NCAA Division 1 Presidents.
In practice, with the committee deciding who is the top six, it's a 5+1 for the autobids.

You know what would be really devious? If the SEC decided to divide into 2 7-team conferences with a shared media contract, gobbling up the 6th autobid.

This is the college sports equivalent of a 9/11 conspiracy.

I’m not saying it would happen, just that it’d be a jerk move if they did and it would be 100% legal.

The automatic part is important. But with 6, they feel that it is almost automatic.

Except they cant because each would not be big enough to hold a CCG and thus not elligable for the 6 highest champion game winner spots or the 4 byes. Still has to be 10 or more schools.

Except by NCAA rules, a conference must have "8" Football playing members. Sooo, I'm doubting this ever happens.

I don’t think they’d have any trouble finding 2 more schools willing to join them.

There is no minimum for a CCG. A CCG is not necessary to declare a Champion (or earn a bye, but yes a 13th game win should be necessary).
