Jamion Christian - New Coach at GW. JTIII Still Available
Jamion Christian will be the new coach at GW. Sources had previously indicated that John Thompson III was the leading candidate. Perhaps a move to Williamsburg is in his future now that he’s bypassed the GW job?
One article did mention that GW’s basketball budget was nearly $3 million per year, while JT III’s outgoing salary at G’Town was higher than that. That’s an entire digit different than what we pay our coaches- $300k vs. $3million. For those that are unhappy with the buyout of $1.7 million over 5 years, how about a new coach who previously made twice that amount per year. Even if we doubled the salary, it wouldn’t even be 20% of previous annual salary. Is that difference too much to overcome? If we do hire him, how long would he stay at a reduced salary when other opportunities present themselves in the coming years?
Another name to consider would be Nate James from Duke. He’s from the DC area, probably ready for a head coaching job. Likely expensive as well, but perhaps not seven figures.
A big question still needing answers is where the money tree is located? We have resources, however many donors who, let’s just say, have several naming rights gifts in their past were left in the dark on the firing, were not given advance courtesy breaking news updates and found out just like everyone else. To assume those gifts will continue or increase to pay for a new coach is not a given at this point. So where’s the new money coming from? Welcome to big time athletics! Interested to hear everyone’s thoughts.

The money is not coming unless there are "Walter Zable" inclined folks who have been waiting in the dark, who will now give much more than they have in the past, to make up for the gap from donors, at least in the short-term, who will now redirect their donations because of this debacle.

An assistant coach from Duke? Really?
Have we ever done that before?

Yes. Chuck Swenson in the 80’s, nearly 40 years ago when he started his seven years here. I guess Duke is still off limits in your opinion? Coach K has come a long way since then.
