And on a side note, they’ll travel from PA to South Carolina to open the season against Hammond on ESPN (08/25). On the way down south they’ll be stopping at JMU and having practice. Will be a good chance to get some eyes on them and also impress with the facilities. While their top player is a 5* recruit, there are several other players that would fit in well at JMU.

Houston took one of the local (to me) kids with him to ECU, he would’ve been a very good fit at JMU.

AJ Webb's full list of offers is impressive.

App State, FAU, FIU, Liberty, UMass, ODU, Pitt, Rutgers, Southern Miss, UVA and WM.

That's right, 3 P5 offers and 10 FBS offers overall.

I'm not seeing the Army offer unless it never made it to his recruiting profiles.

Sammy is just listed as an athlete but is 2 stars on rivals. His more notable offers are ODU and Army. UNH too.

I believe all recruits default to 2 stars and then goes up with higher interest. Always funny to see a 2-star recruit improve to 3 stars literally overnight just by flipping commitments.

Maybe the recent success of JFM and other DB's at JMU have helped change some recruits minds.

Majority of recruits listed by Rivals & 247 are zero/1 star guys.

RE: 2020 FB Recruiting
It’s not that the guys are rated zero stars, the guys with zero stars are not yet rated.

Rivals ratings are defined as:

“A five-star prospect is considered to be one of the nation's top 25-30 players, four star is a top 250-300 or so player, three-stars is a top 750 level player, two stars means the player is a mid-major prospect and one star means the player is not ranked.”

247:
“Players are first grouped qualitatively with a star rating, then given a numerical rating based on their future potential, and finally ranked according to these numerical ratings.

110 - 101 = Franchise Player. One of the best players to come along in years, if not decades. Odds of having a player in this category every year is slim. This prospect has "can’t miss" talent.

100 - 98 = Five-star prospect. One of the top 30 players in the nation. This player has excellent pro-potential and should emerge as one of the best in the country before the end of his career. There will be 32 prospects ranked in this range in every football class to mirror the first round of the NFL Draft.

97 - 90 = Four-star prospect. One of the top 300 players in the nation. This prospect will be an impact-player for his college team. He is an All-American candidate who is projected to play professionally.

89 - 80 = Three-star prospect. One of the top 10% players in the nation. This player will develop into a reliable starter for his college team and is among the best players in his region of the country. Many three-stars have significant pro potential.

79 - below = Two-star prospect. This player makes up the bulk of Division I rosters. He may have little pro-potential, but is likely to become a role player for his respective school.”

“The NCAA said in 2013 there were 310,000-some seniors playing football. Here’s how long their odds are to reach various recruiting ratings, using class of 2018 data from Rivals, if we settle on 300,000 football-playing seniors as a fair estimate.

30 five-stars, or 0.01 percent of the class
380 four-stars, or 0.13 percent of the class
1,328 three-stars, or 0.44 percent of the class
1,859 two-stars, or 0.62 percent of the class
296,403 unrated, or 98.88 percent of the class”
https://www.sbnation.com/college-footbal...l-football

As far as Rivals, zero or one stars doesn’t mean they’re not yet rated. It means they’re not rated high enough to be a 2 star or above, and most never are. While only a fraction of those about 300k HS senior players ever make it into the Rivals recruit database, the # of unrated zero/one star players listed in the database far outnumbers the about 3600 two-five star players. If there is a “default” it would be zero/one star.

I imagine 247 would be similar, but they are more generous with their stars..

RE: 2020 FB Recruiting
The default for a division 1 athlete is 2 stars. Your numbers include the many lower level athletes that weren’t recruited as scholarship athletes.

Then why do recruits we have had committed in the past still had no star rating?

No stars is the default.

Yeah, there’s no way the default could be 2 stars. Look at I-AA recruit classes from not just the CAA, but the lesser full scholarship conferences, too. The OVERWHELMING majority are no star guys. And they are all Div I recruits.

Now if you’re talking G5 & P5, then yeah, 2 stars would pretty much be the minimum..

As has been noted many times, forget the star counts and class/state rankings. The only thing that matters is performance on the field, and the work ethic to keep getting better off it.

The correlation between stars and success on the field is remarkable.

The empirical evidence is overwhelming

I'm not seeing the Army offer unless it never made it to his recruiting profiles.

This is late but I wanted to say how impressed I am with our staff getting this kid’s commitment. He was previously committed to UVA and referred to it as his “dream school.” His offer sheet is impressive and our staff made his feel like his visit was important and showed how special JMU is. He also made a point of saying that Jimmy Moreland went to JMU and could possibly be starting for the Redskins this season in his Rookie year. “If you’re a dog, a dog is going to play.”

Was it a Mickey Matthews quote, "Stars get you fired" or something like that? haha.

Yup, it was that or very similar. I miss Mickey's quotes. His "twitter" quote springs to mind.
