Except maybe they do want to go to 14, whether it's with UMass or not. But to do that, they first needed to clear up UMass' situation.

Now they can either stay at 12, or move to 14 with much more flexibility than before.

It seems like if they went to 14, both would need to be in the east. Liberty and JMU as a tandem would basically be the only option.

Delaware and JMU. Liberty is NOT an option.

....which is why they stay at 12. Delaware isn't a viable option either.

In UMass' contract with the MAC, there is a clause stating that the MAC could invite UMass to join for all sports. If they accept, then great. If not, they must leave entirely, within two years.

So why would the MAC shake up the status quo like this unless they had another all-sports member about to join?

Because 13 is a pain in the a$$ to schedule requiring the MAC to annually seek a waiver to hold a conference title game because it doesn't comply with the rule requiring everyone in a division to play each other.

Because the MAC has re-opened its TV contract negotiations and figured out that UMass doesn't help them get any more money without basketball so why split the pot 13 ways when 12 works just fine.

Because that means no longer have to take a reduced share of CFP money per team.

Other than that no logical reasons the MAC would do that.

While I would be fine with that because FBS is the goal. I have been told the MAC wants JMU/Delaware and JMU Administration (Athletics anyway) is waiting by the phone. They thought the call was going to come a few months ago but sounds like now it is coming soon.

Why would we want UMass? They ain't bringing basketball, and their football team is HORRIBLE! 2 wins in 2 years.

Sun Belt members have to build up their football wins some way.
Why not have a dependable win on the schedule. Could help a potential TV deal also.

That's why we brought in Appy St.

May not, but if they announce to the NCAA prior to July 1st they could be in the Sun Belt July 1st 2015.

Nope. They have to play the 2014 and 2015 seasons in the MAC. That's the contract. Earliest they could be in the Sun Belt is 2016.

Plus you could make UMass schedule SBC basketball OOC games as part of the price for football membership, a reverse of the Notre Dame - ACC agreement. 2-4 UMass/SBC basketball games a year would be helpful for the league RPI.

COGS I'd be soo happy with this. A rivalry with APP and JMU would be huge for LU.

You do realize Presidents make these decisions if it happens right?

Yes, Presidents who will have to send women's softball teams to Mass.

Also, I would hope at least our President realizes that Southern school and New England school don't mix well.

Well UMASS would be football only... But they really offer very little to our "Southern" conference excepting possible tv viewership. Their money is in basketball and their basketball isn't moving.

There have been rumors about JMU and Delaware moving together to the MAC. Of course this could also mean that they stay at 12.

The MAC is negotiating a new TV deal right now so I'm sure it all depends on what gets them the higher dollar amount.

This is rumors within Athletics not just message boards. This is the play that will happen. That leaves Liberty as only option or SBC waits on EKU or MSU which I don't see them waiting.

I just don't get the allure of Delaware. Staying at 12 would be better.

Why not?
UD brings the Philly TV market back to the MAC, which is what they really wanted when they took Temple. UMass, historically tied to Temple was part of that.

UMass is not going to the Sun Belt in any way, shape or form. It's a horrible fit for both institutions; the Belt has no need and the Minutemen are too snobby.

Also, in your opinion, which schools would be a good fit to take the MAC from 12 to 14 schools. I can't really think of any other than Sun Belt schools; but the Sun Belt schools seem pretty happy where they are.

RE: UMass leaving MAC.
Delaware is more closed off to information leaks than even JMU. Newer football coach may try to push their administration
though. MAC posters seem to have always hated their losing Temple and having an odd number for football. If each
member is willing to take a $125,000 + additional monies cut from the NCAA and add JMU and Delaware I do not think
it would be a unanimous vote, but stranger things have happened.
Of course there has been talk of the MAC maybe wanting stAte and Missouri State also, but the MAC is very slow to expand
as proven during their long history.

If 13 is a pain in the ass to schedule, why did the MAC just attempt to do that for all their sports instead of just the one by bringing in UMass for everything?

It's probably true that UMass doesn't bring in any money without basketball. That being said, the MAC didn't kick UMass out, they tried to make things permanent and UMass decided to walk.

The reduced share of CFP money is really chump change. Less than $100k per team. 1% of the football budget for each school. It's not that big of a hit.

I still think you have everything backwards. The MAC invited UMass last month in spite of everything you listed. They wanted UMass. UMass said no and now they have to leave because that's the contract. So why would the MAC want all of that unless they had another school coming in to make it 14?

No because SBC said the next add will be all sports and UMASS isn't coming all sports.
