Jim Corrigan

The dominant thought seems to be that Longwood’s coaching search has come down to two individuals, ODU’s Jim Corrigan and Wake Forest’s Rusty LaRue. Both would be fine choices, but who would be the best fit for Longwood?

Corrigan certainly has the experience advantage, as he’s been an assistant at Old Dominion for the last 18 years. He got a taste of the head coaching job this year and was fairly successful. He also likely has an advantage recruiting in Virginia, especially in the Hampton Roads area, and is also known for his recruiting prowess overseas. Also don’t forget Corrigan played at Duke, Troy Austin’s alma mater.

LaRue, doesn’t have your typical coaching background and was coaching high school football not too long ago. But what LaRue does bring is experience from a high level program, youth, and enthusiasm. He is a guy that kids can easily connect with and has had success recruiting the area also. His honey hole is the “Research Triangle” of North Carolina, which is certainly firmly in the recruiting footprint of Longwood and the Big South.

Kevin McGeehan
Could Longwood look local for our next coach?

Longwood is thought to be in the process of on-campus interviews for the vacant head coaching job this week. One name that keeps popping up is University of Richmond’s Kevin McGeehan.

McGeehan’s name being in the mix at Longwood should not come as a surprise. Obviously there is the proximity and success of the Richmond program that will entice local mid-majors, but there is also another connection. Keith Gill, the Spider’s Athletic Director, is good friends with Troy Austin. Gill is also a graduate of Duke and was the AD at American prior to this year.

McGeehan was the assistant coach under Chris Mooney at Beaver College from 1998 to 2000. When Mooney left, McGeehan took over as the head coach of the Division III program from 2000 to 2002, he then served as a high school head coach in Pennsylvania after that. In 2004 he rejoined Mooney’s bench when he took the head job at Air Force. McGeehan
