Sun Belt Signs Enhanced Agreement with ESPN
More national exposures and extension to 2007-08 are part of the package
May 20th, 2004

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

New Orleans - The Sun Belt Conference has signed an enhanced agreement with ESPN, the league and ESPN announced Thursday morning.

"This is another significant step forward in the growth of our football league and our longstanding partnership with ESPN," said Wright Waters, Sun Belt Conference commissioner. "This enhanced extension of our agreement will continue to benefit the Conference as a whole."

The agreement extends and enhances the Sun Belt’s original contract, which began in 2002-03, into the 2007-08 season and features the national broadcast rights to basketball and football. The new agreement features an increased number of national exposures on ESPN and ESPN2 beginning with the 2004-05 season. The package also includes regionally-syndicated telecasts of football and basketball through ESPN Regional Television (ERT) to include a football, women’s basketball and men’s basketball game of the week.

"We are pleased to continue and enhance our relationship with the Sun Belt Conference," said Chuck Gerber, executive vice president ESPN Regional Television. "The new agreement gives the conference the exposure they deserve and will be a benefit to their growth."

In 1979, the Sun Belt signed ESPN’s first long-term contract with a collegiate conference. The telecast of the 2005 Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Championship game will be carried for the 26th consecutive season by ESPN.

Last season marked the first nationwide telecast of a Sun Belt Conference football game, when North Texas defeated New Mexico State, 13-10, on Tuesday, Nov. 25 on ESPN2. The games selected for national telecast in 2004 will be announced on Monday, July 19 at the Sun Belt Conference Football Media Days, in addition to the league’s ERT package. The package is expected to include several mid-week games.

In basketball, the deal calls for a minimum of eight men’s and eight women’s regular season games in the ERT package. The enhanced contract also extends coverage of the men’s tournament championship game to an unprecedented 29 consecutive seasons by the 2007-08 season.

ESPN Regional Television, a subsidiary of ESPN, Inc., is a television/radio sports marketing, syndication, event management and production company. Based in Charlotte, N.C., ESPN Regional Television is the nation's largest syndicator of intercollegiate sports programming and produces more than 740 sporting events annually, accounting for more than 2,000 live and/or original hours of programming.

There isn't much meat to this article. Anyone know how much the contract with ESPN is worth ($$$03-wink and how many guaranteed football games will be shown? I don't see where any of that is covered in the article...

From what Ive heard, its comperable to what the MACs contract is, so bassically, we'll prlly get a couple mid-week national games or a better regional package. $ wise, its been heard that its around the area of MAC/WAC contracts, which is a major plus for our conference.

So then, the deal still sounds like a rumor as long as there is no concrete information available...
