Each bowl appearance will earn EMU's Chris Creighton extra year under new contract - WMU2013 - 11-16-2023 12:23 PM

Creighton wants that 6th win more than anybody. Correct me if I am wrong, he has 3 years left on his deal?

There’s a stipulation in article 2.1 of section 3 that states….”A one year extension will be granted for each bowl invitation unless there are losses to lowly WMU and/or CMU”

Kidding

Are EMU fans happy with Chris Creighton? Or do you guys want new leadership?

Better question were we happy with the 30 years prior to Chris Creighton?

If we go to a bowl game I’ll be happy this season.

Is that a serious question? He beat your team four years in a row, you finally win one, and you're asking that? C'mon man.

I seriously was surprised you lost to a Lance Taylor coached team. And a Lou Esposito defense. We stink.

Absolutely nailed it.

Both, kind of. I am happy with what Chris Creighton built, but I think he’s peaked and I’d love for someone new to potentially get us over the hump and into the MACC.

Sadly, with the contract that you mentioned, it almost certainly isn’t going to happen until Creighton finally decides to retire. Many people here are happy with that. 6-6 and a bowl game appearance is enough for them because we were awful for a long time, and they’re terrified of going back to that. I respect that, but I want more, especially in an era of league-wide parity. Since Creighton was hired, every single team in the MAC has made it to Ford Field, except us. And it’s probably going to stay that way until a new coach comes in. Whenever that may be.

I think the general feeling on Creighton is a positive one among the fanbase. As other have pointed out the 30+ years prior to him taking over were a mess. Taking out his first two years when he was laying down his foundation, he is basically a .500 coach overall, who is sub .500 in the MAC. That is all a huge improvement for a program that was being talked about being dropped down a level or being dropped all together. The games are much more competitive and entertaining. He's gone on the road and beaten four power-five teams and played others close. And of course got our first bowl win since 1987 last year while winning the Michigan MAC.

The other thing (and I don't know the guy so this is all from watching/reading about him and what other have said) is that he is a very good man. He cares about the university, the players, and the community. He seems to do a great job of building a family-like atmosphere with team, they are out doing community service projects, team-building trips, and the team GPA and graduation rate is always good.

So overall, he has done wonders for EMU football. Admittedly the bar was pretty low, but he has gotten it to a place I think few of us thought it could be. If we beat Buffalo next week that will be his sixth bowl game. That would be six bowl games in eight years, and six in seven normal years (if you take out 2020). Furthermore, if you had told us when they hired Creighton that he would make six bowl games in 10 years (or even five if he lose to Buffalo), I think most would have been happy to hear that.

I think there is some frustration for some fans (me included) because it seems like we have left some meat on the bone these past few years. In 2018 and 2022 we were literally one play away from winning the MAC-west and going to the MAC championship game both years. At times there can be a feeling of playing too conservative or "playing not to lose, and not playing to win." In addition to that, after a great season last year expectations were at an all-time high going into this year and even if we do get to a bowl, the season has felt pretty disappointing. The offense has been about as bad as it's been.

I want to highlight that part above because just saying/thinking/typing something like that would have been unimaginable for EMU football just a short time ago. I think Creighton deserves credit for that.

Regardless of the outcome of Tuesdays game, this is a huge off-season for Coach Creighton. There are certainly some major holes on this years team, but the last two recruiting classes have been good, so those guys should be ready to go next year, and of course the transfer portal CAN be a quick fix at times. If things don't improve some though, I could see people getting...impatient.

This is a board for Sickos - myself included. I want to build a statue of the guy but apparently I'm in the minority.

Me too and I think it will happen in due time. Winning is great but being a tremendous mentor, leader of young men, and pillar of the community is way more important. CC has a lifetime contract as far as I'm concerned and he will leave on his terms which is great.

I agree. 6 - 6 or even 5 - 7 isn't the end of the world. We have to remember FB is a zero sum game. One team wins and one loses. Not everyone can win 8 games.

We did not just lose, we got pounded by Lance, at home! We loved Tim Lester! I doubt Esposito will be back. Keep in mind one thing. You guys may not be bowling, but you played THREE PAYDAY games in route to your record. Good for your athletic dept budget, however, not so good for bowl eligibility.

Creighton plays just one Payday game and yet gets an auto extension of his contract with a bowl appearance. Love the guy, his contract, not so much.

I am never happy with CC. I hope he retires from EMU. What he has buillt here is incredible; a winning culture on and off the field. EMU never has the most resources or talent, but hard work and integrity brings success, a perfect fit for the university.

And he actually wins said payday game numerous times. We call that a Win-Win.

Plus CC probably runs the cleanest D1 program in the state. Of course with UM MSU and CMU that isn't a high bar.
