Ian McCaw’s Choice For Liberty’s Next Head Will Be… - CarlSmithCenter - 11-28-2022 06:54 PM

IMHO it will be of the following:
1) Art Briles;
2) Art Briles’ son (Kendal);
3) Art Briles’ son-in-law (Jeff Lebby); or
4) Houston Nutt.

Thoughts?

Art Briles will be 67 next month - do they want to go that route?
Kendal is a much better possibility. He has been linked to FAU, but Liberty would be a better option for him, IMHO.
Lebby would be too much of a gamble and unproven, given OU's struggles this year
Nutt is 65, hasn't coached in 11 years.

If Briles was 50 then he'd get a chance to resurrect his career, but at 67 I think that he's done. As for the others? Kendal might be good, but Lebby and Nutt probably not.

I’m thinkin’ no to all the above.

RE: Ian McCaw’s Choice For Liberty’s Next Head Will Be… - Ned Low - 11-28-2022 07:26 PM

Kendall Briles would be an excellent fit at either Liberty or FAU. With the money they are offering they ay be able to get a current HC from the AAC, CUSA, SunBelt or MAC.

KC Keeler, Curt Cignetti, Kendal Briles, GJ Kinnie or... how about Nick Rolovich? ALl would do well there. They're loaded and can spend the money... it will be hard for any coach to turn them down.

Hell, they might go after Mike Houston at ECU for all I know.

Doesn’t Wommack have the inside track on the Hoosiers job whenever Allen moves on? I know Liberty can pay more than USA but if he’s got a clear path to a P2 job right now not sure he makes a move. Curious if y’all are thinking about a Riley/Kelly type swing for a sitting FBS HC - I think you all have the $$$ to make a play for a Mike Houston at ECU or a Scott Satterfield who has had antipathy with the brass at Louisville.

What's Dan Mullen up to?

RE: Ian McCaw’s Choice For Liberty’s Next Head Will Be… - BigOwensboroCard - 11-28-2022 11:37 PM

If I’m Liberty I would be looking real hard at Scott Frost. Just saying if SF can be lured to Liberty and turn them into what he had at UCF they will be rocketing up future expansion list. He isn’t hurting for money with the buy out he received from Nebraska, and he is as loyal of a person you will get who will not be sniffing out employment elsewhere.

The other person I would be interested in is Garrett Riley TCUs OC would be a pretty good choice, and coaching is in his blood for his brother HC at USC. Young offensive minded coach most likely ready to go out and prove his worth.

Wonder what Turner Gill has to say to fellow ex-Husker QB Scott Frost about the Liberty job.

Most folks at Liberty love and value Turner Gill. He was a good football coach for LU and kept the ball rolling toward FBS. He even came back to work for the university within the athletic department after retiring as HC. I liked him a lot and wish he were still part of the Flame family. Hope he’s doing well at Arkansas.

Houston is making $2.25M at ECU if I am not mistaken and we just signed him up for an extension with a larger buyout. Still, Liberty can definitely afford to poach him if they really want to move in that direction. He would be a good hire for sure and I would hate to see him leave but at the same time, my loyalty to coaches ended when Skip left. There's plenty of folks out there who would be good HCs and like Pittman at Arky said (to paraphrase), "the best HC may not be the sexiest one but rather one who knows what he's doing when he gets there." The ECU job would attract plenty of good candidates and hopefully one that would be able to build on the culture that Houston has slowly gotten installed.

He seemed out of his depth at Kansas. Little did we know at the time that our new AD would make two (not one, but two) worse HC hires.

I'd heard that Turner Gill retired from coaching because his wife was ill. Do you know if that is true and if she recovered? He seemed like a good person.

Art Briles is still the best college football coach in Texas - period!

They'll most likely make the mistake of promoting one of their coordinators. Every school has to learn that first hand.
