Tim Lester Out At Western - Toledo Please Fire Candle - Nick in Cleveland - 11-28-2022 02:15 PM

If Western can fire Lester, a former Bronco all MAC QB, we should be able to can Candle ASAP.

FootballScoop can confirm that Western Michigan will not retain head coach Tim Lester.

Lester was 37-32 in six seasons, and he led the program to a 5-7 finish this fall.

The 2022 season was his first losing season in six years in Kalamazoo.

Lester's buyout is $500k and he had three years remaining on his contract.

ASAP.... Rockets and Candle are playing in MACC in 5 days....let's be fair and realistic with our expectations and timeline here for that decision...

Wow, that $500K buyout for three years is really low. O'Brien could have learned something from him.

O'Brien was afraid if he didn't offer enough on the new contract he'd have to actually go out and look for a new coach. Too much work, even though he would have turned it over to consultants.

This is where a new and untested AD will show his worth. Firing a coach is never going to be easy when the record isn't horrid, no losing seasons, no character issues, etc. etc. Just not meeting expectations that are likely just assumed and not in writing as far as expectations. He's paid well to make those decisions and show what he can do. He's got pressure on him to not screw it up and find a very competent and capable replacement. Western's season is over. They can move on their change in direction. If Candle wins the MACC and a bowl game, he's coming back. No one would make the decision to let him go after that success (a championship) while also paying a severance from the contract. It also means Candle will be without a contract after 2023. That is tough on recruiting. If he wins the MACC, he may just well say I've got to find a job to avoid being out of work, but how you keep that quiet - if he decides to go in that direction - will be tough.

I just saw his buddy Satterfield is heading from South Carolina to Nebraska to be the OC under Ruhle. That might be an option for him - but I don't see him getting an opportunity outside of an OC. Don't know about going back with Campbell. I would think after this year Campbell is not as highly thought of (1-8 and 4-8).

Maybe they both end up back at Mount Union...
